Who is Harriet Miers?

This should be an interesting confirmation process.

The Conservative Republicans are criticizing the nomination as not being conservative enough.

Senate Minority Leader Harry Reid (Democrat) actually asked the president to consider Ms. Miers as a candidate for the court.

However, not unlike Judge Roberts, she has almost no record that would give people any insight into how she would rule as member of the court.

The following link to CNN gives you access to who she is and some of the initial reactions to her nomination http://www.cnn.com/2005/POLITICS/10/04/miers/index.html.

Extra credit for information on who Harriet Miers is. Please keep this info political and phiulosophical. For EG. she has never been married but that won't get you any credit

More general background...

1993-1994—Worked as counsel for Bush's gubernatorial campaign

1995-2000—Appointed chairwoman of Texas Lottery Commission by Gov. George Bush

1996—Became president of Locke, Purnell, and the first woman to lead a major Texas law firm

1998—Presided over the merger of Locke, Purnell with another big Texas firm, Liddell, Sapp, Zivley, Hill & LaBoon, and became co-managing partner of the megafirm, Locke Liddell & Sapp

2000—Represented Bush and Cheney in a lawsuit about their dual residency in Texas while running in the Presidential primary

2001—Selected as staff secretary for President Bush

2003—Promoted to Deputy Chief of Staff for Policy

2004—Selected as White House Counsel

Pretty basic stuff...enough to be an associate justice? I have some doubts.

She also has never been a judge. However this should not rule her out as a candidate, as many justices before her had not been a judge before they became a justice, including the man our school is named after, John Marshall. We should at least see what her opinions are on the major issues before dismissing her as unqualified for the job.

I found a website that said she recieved her undergraduate and law degrees from Southern Methodist Universtiy, and was the first woman hired by the Dallas firm, Locke Purnell Boren Laney & Neely. It said her clients were Microsoft and the Walt Disney co.

Miers has received many awards such as The 1997 Woman of the Year, the 1996 Louise Raggio Award, the 1993 Sarah T. Hughes Award, and the 1992 Dallas Bar Association's Justinian Award for Community Service. In 2005 she received the Sandra Day O'Connor award.

Although part of me wanted to say she's only getting the job because she's a woman, and apparently affirmitive action says we should give her a better chance than any man, after reading more about this woman on your (biased) "news" source i have to say i like her! From the few articles i have read i can only conclude she is conservative but not too far right wing and that's important in a supreme court member! A member of such an important and influential governing and interpreting body should not have a stong political agenda, but look for the best and right solution in the interpretation of our constitution. As far as the article about her filling out the questionaire, i applaud her approach (even though a certain news source intended it to be a negative.) So far, my vote, if i could vote, is with MS Miers.

I found out that she first wanted to be a teacher, but changed her mind when a lawyer helped fix her families' financial problem after her father's stroke. She is also said to be one of Bush's closest personal friends, and was actually heard calling him "the most brilliant man she ever met." (can you beleive that!)Anyways, thats all I could find about her that wasnt already said!

Who is she? No one cares. Just kidding. Why was she chosen? Elementary my dear Watson. Check this out. Even the president has got to answer to the old ball-and-chain. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/07/12/AR2005071200456.html
I was listening to an interview and I heard the reporter talk about Laura Bush wanting a woman to replace Sandra Day O'Connor so when I found out Harriet Miers was a "strong" candidate, I laughed. Hey, even the President of the strongest country in the world needs somewhere to sleep at night.

now that Harriet Miers has declined to be a supreme court judge, or that's what I've heard. I'm all about my new favorite candidate, Judge Mathias. He doesn't take nothin' from nobody. I posted after points couldn't be had so only the hardcore bloggers would read this. Represent!

Attention, Attention!
I guess I source, I won't name names but SHE is in APLG, was wrong. I saw on NBC this morning that same thing Becky wrote about- her stance on abortion. She did it for an anti-abortion group, so maybe she was just playing to the crowd.
