Since most comments to Mr. Thompson have been song lyrics, I thought I'd actually respond to his probing content. Here's the Social Security Administration's latest Cost Of Living Adjustments (COLAs) for the past couple of decades, which can offer you some benchmarks. http://www.ssa.gov/OACT/COLA/colaseries.html

"By sending Congress his pay plan yesterday, Bush avoided triggering a part of the 1990 law that would have provided federal employees with an overall pay raise of 8.6 percent, which would have met a congressional goal of narrowing differences in salaries between the government and the private sector. Bush said a raise of that size would have cost $8.8 billion, an outlay that he said would interfere with higher priorities, such as maintaining the war against terrorism."

The fact that Bush is more interested in funding a controversial war than providing his citizens with adequate means is deeply disturbing. I am frustrated with Bush's disconnect with the American people and his poorly ordered priorities.

Hear, hear! Sammi. It seems that when Bush "avoided triggering a part of the 1990 law that would have provided federal employees with an overall pay raise of 8.6 percent" it could have been to avoid focus from the American people on how much money it takes to fund the war. By not adding to government spending with federal employee salary raises, one less thing will add the public's discontent.
