One Hundred Years of Solitude

Hello:)

First, Chapter THREE, not Chapter Five is due at the beginning of class on Wednesday - we took more time than I anticipated on Monday going through Chapter One.

Key points from Monday's discussion of Chapter One:

1. Characters. We progressed through each of the main characters identifying attributes (with text support). Also included was the town of Macondo and its inhabitants.
2. Setting -- place (Southern Columbia), time is amorphous - shifting within sentences to different moments in a lifetime to shifting eras (before original sin to Sir Francis Drake to "now").
3. Extraordinary - the impossible is presented realistically/off-handed (disappearing gypsy), the mundane is phenomenal (false teeth, magnets, ice).
4. Plot -- there IS already a plot arc begun - what is it?
5. Narrator - whose mind(s) are we in? Bit more with this, but we'll keep exploring.
6. Events - have an understanding of the basic happenings in the chapters.
