Here's where we are at:
Satire instruction is done, along with enough examples (both clear and muddy -- the muddy helps us define our understanding more than the clear ones) that you should be able identify and analyze like a genius.
Now: "The Great Chain of Being" by Alexander Pope. Read the intro and answer the first two questions for Friday.
Next: Whence comes evil? Optimist, Manichean, and Monotheistic Christian perspectives will be explored, with a bit of Deism.
Then: Voltaire context.
Then: Candide
Paper due Wednesday.

Greetings from a student up the way! I stumbled across this blog quite accidentally (I was very much surprised to find amongst the results churned out by a Google search of the terms "Enemy of the People" + "AP Lit" a blog written by the instructor of a few friends) and have found reading this blog quite an interesting experience.
A topic that has been dwelling in my mind of late is the utility of the four years I have spent in high school. Of all the subjects, I have found English the hardest one to scrutinize; outside of composition and literary analysis, there are few metrics to judge the usefulness of a given course. Unlike other courses and teachers, (who are generally quite easy to stack up against each other) English courses very quite widely from class to class, school to school, and state to state. The basis for accurate comparison of teachers and the courses they teach is lost amidst the sharp contrasts in curriculum.
Thus, I have resigned myself to scrutinizing the titles my English teachers have chosen for me to read. This subject in and of itself is quite interesting, and I I have discussed at length with several of my old and current teachers.
This is what brings me to you. Unlike every single one of my teachers, you do not seem to have a set-in-stone list of titles which you make your students read every year. A quick peruse of this blog is enough to see that the list of books you read with your AP Lit students changes quite drastically from year to year, with very few works appearing consistently since you began this project in 2005.
This rather unique character of your classes has me quite curious as to how you choose the titles your class will read in a given year. If it is not too much of a trouble, I would be very interested hearing what factors determine your selections, what works you feel are absolutely necessary for AP Literature students to be familiar with, and your thoughts on whether any particular titles have led to great success or utter failure in the teaching of your classes.
