Friday 2.24.12

1. Paper due Monday: Create a satire, modeled after A Modest Proposal, which assumes a character's voice and makes that character look ridiculous. Remember to include a larger aim/purpose, otherwise it's just parody.
a. Choose your target
b. List 4-5 items of how there is a contradiction between how being presented versus how actually is.
c. Choose the presentation arena (press conference, vlog transcript, letter to editor, student assembly, overhead conversation. . .)

On Friday:

Go to question two, the Onion article

AP LANG
1. Attendance orally (no seating chart)
2. 5 minutes – have students finish/polish their partner SATIRE POEMS
3. Swap papers with another group. On the paper, identify at least THREE satiric techniques
4. Swap again. On the paper, write a genius statement.
5. Return to original authors, we’ll work with them again on Monday.
6. Distribute 2005 AP prompt sheets. In groups of four (their choosing), they should, together:
a. Create a genius statement
b. Write 4-5 sentences that would be an excerpt from their group essay. I am looking for DEPTH not BREADTH. I would prefer that the students tear apart all that is going on in a single sentence – digging deeply – rather than trying to analyze the entire piece. I want them to tell me more and more about less and less.
c. Work time, we’ll look at what they created on Monday.
