"Pork"

Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to find an example of pork barrel spending by Congress. You need to provide a brief description of who (member of Congress) and where (the state), what (the project) , and how much (your tax dollars). I need something contemporary though and not something from 1976 (that means 20011/12 if you aren't sure). It needs to be original too; you can not post something one of your classmates has previously responded with.If you can link us to the site great.Otherwise just copy the website address in your response. If the info comes from a periodical, then cite it for us.

EXAMPLE Representative Rosa L. DeLauro (D - Connecticut) has recently been named October's "Pooper of the Month" (Oops sorry that should be "Porker of the Month".) At a time when our nation is swaddled with almost $15 trillion in debt she has proposed the Diaper Investment and Aid to Promote Economic Recovery Act aka D.I.A.P.E.R. This legislation would make grants available to help those struggling in the US with among other things buying diapers. I am not a big fan of tax dollars being spent on cleaning up this mess. Something wreaks of this whole idea. This D.I.A.P.E.R. bill is flush with pork as well as other stuff that is hard to digest. It is a crappy legislation! Stop this unnecessary spending before anymore such D.I.A.P.E.R. rash decisions are made!

This is an assignment not extra credit. Credit given to the first 68 original entries and is due by the start of class on Nov. 4th.
Happy hunting for "pork".
Mr. Thompson

My pork barrel spending example is by senator Robert Byrd from West Virgina. These earmarks spent 15,614,000 dollars on various projects that involved agriculture in Kearneysville. Some of the projects dealt with agriculture waste but these projects would only benefit West Virgina and more specificly the town of Kearneysville.

All aboard! Representative Jerrod Nadler (D- New York) stated on January 27, 2011, that $117 billion dollars in federal funding for high-speed rails should be collected over the next 30 years. He claims that it will “generate an operating surplus of $900 million per year,” which is highly unlikely due to the fact that Amtrak has had to receive $37 billion in subsidies instead of making a profit when it was purchased by the government in 1971. For taxpayers, this means that you will be helping to pay for the outrageous cost of $22 billion to $132 billion per mile that the fancy choo choo trains will run. High-rail trains are supposed to cut down on carbon emissions and traffic congestion, but in reality the environmental benefits are lower than originally thought and congestion is primarily due to commuters, not inter-city travelers. Clearly, we should not be wasting our money on high-rail trains when our country is already in a gigantic amount of debt.

This is only going to help most of Hawaii with tourism and a frontier of oceanic exploration on the West Coast and most of the $198,000,000 will end up going to the Federal Health Care Network. However, only tourists go to Hawaii and the state only contains a small percentage of the total US population, so why spend most of the money towards the health care network in Hawaii when established institutions are on the mainland?

The July 2000 Sen. Robert Bennett (R-Utah), whose home state is hosted the 2002 Winter Games, wrangled $3.3 million in federal funds to test athletes for drugs. That meant taxpayers were footing the bill for 75 percent of the $4.3 million Olympic drug-testing budget. According to Bennett, "A drug-free Games is an important message to send to the world. It is appropriate that the federal government take part in this anti-drug effort." The real war on cocaine, heroin, and other dangerous drugs continues across the country, but Sen. Bennett apparently thinks taxpayers should be more worried about those speed skaters who look just a bit too buff. While illicit drug use of any kind, in or out of athletic competition, is unacceptable. Do the organizers of the Olympic Games really need the U.S. government paying for their screening program? After all, the Salt Lake Olympic Committee cashed in on an $859 million joint marketing agreement, $443 million from broadcast rights, and $180 million from ticket sales. With all that money rolling in, federal subsidies for drug testing are hardly necessary. I think that money made from that Olympic Games should be use to repay taxpayers for putting up the bill to host the Olympic.

Consumer spending on beef was $76 billion in 2008 and has grown $26.9 billion since 1999. Per capita spending for beef in retail and foodservice was about $249 in 2008 — up about $50 from 2001. In 2008, per capita consumption of beef was 59.9 pounds, compared to 59.2 pounds for chicken.” Taxpayers have a real beef paying for this big fat earmark.

An interesting take on Pork Barrel spending--it's almost as if the author of this article, Dan Shapley, believes tucking 'little' eco pork bits into various bills so there is little to no debate on their instatement.

At any rate, Shapely's article is full of eco-friendly pork that seems relatively harmless, but also very, very expensive. The article lists causes seeking funds such as 'Weather technology and observation at Plymouth State University' and 'Rio Grande endangered species collaborative program' (both calling for about $200,000).

It seems however, that there is some pork within this pork (cannibalism?), as some of the expenses listed are along the lines of "$800,000 for a tunnel at Yosemite National Park", which doesn't seem like much of a green issue to me.

Sorry, I didn't see that the one I just entered was already posted.

Another example is:

$100,000 by Rep. Diane Watson (D-Calif.) for career exploration and training for at-risk youths for jobs in filmmaking at the Duke Media Foundation in Hollywood.

My pork barrel example is by John McCain. He made a $165,000 earmark to Vermont for maple syrup research. Vermont had a bad harvesting year, and it was claimed that the research money would help the process to be more efficient and would cut costs for consumers. Apparently, the maple syrup industry generates $200 million for just Vermont's economy (there are maple syrup industries elsewhere, but mostly in Vermont).

LIGHTS. CAMERA. PORK?
Sen. Chuck Hagel, a republican from Nebraska, decided that National Treasure: Book of Secrets was a personal religious experience worth spending $1000 of the government's money to buy out the movie theater and watch it alone in peace.

Now that's not really legit pork, so here's a fishy example that will make you clam up with fear. Mike Castle,a republican from Delaware, manage to get congress to shell out 19 million dollars to fund a free- clam program. Aw how nice! He wants to feed to poor with clams! Oh wait...what is that smell?! It's the smell of Mike Castle giving free clams to EVERYONE who has never tasted a clam before. Thank Moses for men like Mike Castle who look out for the clamless public.

Sen. Thad Cochran, a republican from Mississippi spent 200,000 for the Washington National Opera, for set design, and installation and performing arts at libraries and schools. That much money for music and arts at school? The focus should be on the students classes and their success. (Not saying that music and art aren't important, there's just things that are more important)

Representative Michele Bachmann (R - Minnesota)is attempting to push for (with the help of Democratic Senators Al Franken and Amy Klobuchar) a $690 million project to replace a 2 lane drawbridge with a 4 lane one to connect Stillwater (Population of 20,000) to the even smaller town of Houlton. I don't see why a town a fifth of the size of Rochester needs a 4 lane bridge, but then again I'm not the most intelligent person in the world either.

My pork barrel spender is Alan Mollohan. He is a house representative from West Virginia. He is from the democratic party. He spent 17,976,000 dollars across 33 projects. The largest of which was 1.5 million for natural stream design and restoration at the West Virginia Department of Natural Resources.

This year, minority leader Nancy Pelosi requested $500,000 for a new ferry service in Berkeley, California. The tax dollars would be used to pay for two new ferries. As if we need to put our faith in fairies. . .

Scratch the Nancy Pelosi comment (didn't notice someone had done that one already)

This comes from the same website. Michigan House Representative Mark Schauer has requested $150,000 to renovate the Tibbits Opera House in Coldwater, Mich.

This same renovation could've been paid for by simply raising ticket prices by $3.56. Doesn't seem like the whole country needs to help out when we won't be watching any shows there.

Reading through a few of these I noticed that Sen. Thad Cochran, R-Mississippi has already been mentioned a few times. It seems this porker likes to get around. This time he is being noted for providing $500,000 to the University of Southern Mississippi, for the purpose of cannabis eradication. I know that this country declared a war on drugs but 500,000 dollars to try to get rid of something that can be found growing in ditches at a college campus seems a bit excessive in the spending department.

my prok barrel spending example is by Politicians on both sides of the isle, add personal projects into appropriations and authorization bills. They do this to try to win voter approval and support, back at home. Here are some examples one is $3.1 million to convert a ferry boat into a crab restaurant in Baltimore.$6.4 million for a Bavarian ski resort in Kellogg, Idaho.
$13 million to repair a privately owned dam in South Carolina.
$4.3 million for a privately owned museum in Johnstown, Pennsylvania.

Eric Cantor, after berating Nevada about how the proposed railway to connect Las Vegas and Disneyland was wasteful pork-barrel spending, then lobbies the Transportation Department for over $3 billion in stimulus money on a high-speed-rail project in his home state of Virgina. He justifies this by claiming that Virginia will demonstrate this investment in rail will create jobs, reduce congestion, spur economic growth and improve the environment.

Senator Mary Landrieu (D-LA), who ranks 28th out of the 100 in amount of money in her 145 earmarks of 2010, supported a $500,000 earmark in an Interior Bill for an Endangered Whooping Crane Propagation Facility, to incubate Whooping Crane eggs through the Audubon Institute in New Orleans, in 2010. This ruffled my feathers. With all this whooping around with tax dollars, no wonder we have a fowl outlook on reduction of this year's deficit.

Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont wants to spend $165,000 to staff and supply a maple syrup research facility a syrup company built with its own money. Worried that Canada is gaining too much ground in the industry, Leahy argues making syrup is a vital part of Vermont's economy. They want to study a non-traditional technique for producing syrup, but do they really need a dedicated testing facility and that kind of money for staff - for maple syrup??? Just get some guts and a pioneering spirit, and live it on the edge. That is how America became great after all.
