The story is of Ethan Frome, a man in the conflict between his reponsiblity to his sickly wife and his desire for his wife's youthful cousin. Ethan's inablility to resolve the conflict eventually leads to the ultimate tragedy brought about by the unrealistic impulses that drove him into conflict in the first place.

Roses are red,

Ethan Frome is about a poor man in an unfortunate conflict between his wants and his morals. He really wants to be with Mattie, although he is a married man. He constantly thinks of solutions, such as running away. However, the novel shows the power of social contentions and how they restrain ethan from his desires.
The story, at its core, shows that a person who is morally bounded by obligations cannot ever break free from them in a righteous manner.
