I'm Posting This Early (Calendar says Wed)
Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to find an example of pork spending by Congress. You need to provide a brief description of who and where (member of Congress and state), what (the project) , and how much (your tax dollars). I need something current though and not something from 1995. It needs to be original too; you can not post something one of your classmates has previously responded with.
If you can link us to the site great. Otherwise just copy the website address in your response.
If the info comes from a periodical, then cite it for us. Check the calendar for due date and happy hunting for "pork".
Some info you'll love:
This year, there was good news and bad news. For fiscal 2006, appropriators stuffed 9,963 projects into the 11 appropriations bills, a 29 percent decrease over last year’s total of 13,997. Despite the reduction in the number of earmarks, Congress porked out at record dollar levels with $29 billion in pork for 2006, or 6.2 percent more than last year’s total of $27.3 billion. In fact, the total cost of pork has increased by 29 percent since fiscal 2003. Total pork identified since 1991 adds up to $241 billion.
Even though Alaska led the nation with $489 per capita ($325 million), it was less than half of Alaska’s 2005 per capita number of $985. The runners up in 2006 were Hawaii with $378 per capita ($482 million) and the District of Columbia with $182 per capita ($100 million). Alaska’s drop can be attributed to Sen. Ted Stevens’ (R-Alaska) descent from the throne as Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman. (Sorry Meghan for the bad news on your Senator)
Couple of examples of Pork:
Last year Senator Ted Steven's from Alaska asked for "some" money to help build a bridge in Alaska - 223 million dollars (of federal dollars) to build a bridge to link an island with about 50 people to a bustling city of 8000 people (Ketchican) on the mainland. This bridge became affectionately known as the Bridge to No Where. The bridge would span the vast Tongass Narrows (1/2 mile across) and allow people to drive instead of having to endure a grueling 7 minute ferry ride at the cost of $6 per car, $4 per pedestrian. Sen. Stevens drew the ire of the nation when in Oct. of 2005 he opposed Congress taking the money to be used on the bridge project and diverting it to aid for Hurricane Katrina. In his speech on the senate floor, Stevens threatened to quit Congress if the funds were removed from his state.
This year, Congress has allocated 1 million dollars to study waterfree urinals. Another example of Congress doing their "dooty".
Assignment is due Wed. December 13th,
Enjoy,
Mr. Thompson

This one relates to us here in Minnesota! Senator John Thune, a Republican from South Dakota, secured a $2.3 billion loan for good ol' DM&E. The loan is said to be needed to improve and expand the rail line. The probable annual payment is $46 million more than DM&E's current annual revenue, meaning it doesn't look good for taxpayers who would consequently have to pay the deficit. DM&E is also the ranked last in railroad companies when it comes to safety, and past handouts have failed to solve these problems. The article puts it best: "if the project's benefits vastly exceeded its costs, a federal loan would not be necessary."

This is another one that has to do with Alaska, home of Senate Appropriations Committee ranking member Republican Ted Stevens.
Recently, $62.4 million was given for commerce projects in Alaska, including $750,000 to prevent Atlantic salmon from escaping state streams and $4 million for sea lion recovery projects.
I don't think very many states have to deal with sea lions.
The info came from this article:

Hey APLGers,
I want current pork spending not something from 2002. Trust me there is enough pork in the 2007 budget for everyone.
Mr. Thompson
Rep. David Price (D-N.C.) made a request for $750,000 to help with a project to update arrival times on bus signs via satelite so they can be found by cell phone and computer as well. The total extimate for the project is $950,000.

There was a long article called Congress Returns to Spending Bills Loaded With Pork Here:

Actually, this site shows "Some of the Pork Projects in the Remaining FY 2007 Appropriations Bills."

I found the quarter of a million to the "Grand Opera House" of Iowa interesting.
Bad links, sorry.
Aricle about this FY spending on pork

$175,000 to the Charter School Development Foundation for the Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy, in the district of Rep. Shelly Berkely (D-Nev.). Why is this school named after a former tennis star? And with such a rich backer, why are government funds necessary?!

In 2007, the pork spending for Grape Genetics in Geneva, New York, will be $628,843 in a house appropriation bill. That is a good couple hundred thousand spent wouldn't you say?
http://www.heritage.org/Research/Budget/wm1256.cfm
I found this one particularly interesting...The House gave $300,000 to the American Ballet Theater within something passed under the Labor committee. I don't know how much you all know about ballet companies, but sometimes they have a really hard time getting money (even tougher than theaters for acting). http://www.heritage.org/Research/Budget/upload/pork_projects.html

This one is actually from 2007 instead of 2002 from the House. This is in an agriculture appropriations bill and it would give $365,156 for Potato Breeding in Aberdeen, Idaho.
Mike Simpson is one of the Idaho congressmen who endorsed this pork.

Proposed by Senator George Voinovich (R-OH), $587,000 for the "Ohio-Israel Agriculture Initiative." The goals include:
-Promote agricultural cooperation between Ohio and Israel through their governments, farmers, research institutions, trade associations and private companies.
-Generate commercial exchanges and markets
-Identify potential agribusiness opportunities for development in both regions
-Identify and coordinate joint research and international development projects

Darling congressman Hal Rogers (R-Kentucky) helped get $1,000,000 to the Southern & Eastern Kentucky Tourism Development Association. I don't know, it caught my eye. I guess Kentucky's tourism is in need of a boost, according to this pork.

The last comment about Mike Pence was from Eric.
I thought the article below would be a nice follow up to an interesting assignment (yes I know it was due the 13th). Not only does it (the article) talk about the Democrats intentions of wiping out pork, but it also discusses how spending cuts can impact the bureaucracy and what it means for citizens.
Towards the very end it also illustrates how Republicans used the committee system in the House and the power of the majority leader in the Senate in order to make cuts to spending while avoiding the public's ire.
Congress's Inaction Threatens Funding.
