I’d like to wrap up our unit of inaugural addresses. The President’s inaugural address is a way to restate their goals that they have been campaigning and state to America what exactly they are trying to accomplish in their term. After listing to everyone’s presentation of the different president’s inaugural addresses I wanted to look into how much the presidents actually stick to what they say in their address once they start their term. One example is how President Obama talks about the removal of troops in his inaugural address. “We will begin to responsibly leave Iraq to its people and forge a hard-earned peace in Afghanistan” (President Obama). Although he says that he wants to remove the troops, he has found that that is easier said then done, and he is sending more troops to Afghanistan. This is nothing against President Obama it is merely an example of something that many presidents have done. This makes me wonder if what inaugural addresses actually stand for. Has the new technology of televisions and internet turned a once historical event into just another way for the president to gain popularity with Americans? Or is what the President says in their inaugural address what they really believe they will try to accomplish for the country? One side of me believes that over the years inaugural addresses have just turned into another way to gain popularity, because now with the internet and televisions Presidents have more viewers watching their addresses which give a prime opportunity to gain popularity. On the other side I feel that Presidents are speaking on what they honestly feel they are going to do for our country, but when in comes down to it they have to change what they originally said for the sake of America. Please comment I want to see how everyone else feels about this.

The presidential inaugural address has become more of a hopeful, optimistic speech on what the president wants to accomplish, but once in office reality sinks in and he quickly realizes that it would be impossible to do everything the way he said it in his inaugural address.

I'm not really sure on this..... I mean, most presidents have some political experience as senators, governors, representatives, etc. and you would think they learn about the system and how difficult it is to actually make things happen, especially if you have a Congress of the opposite party (which Pres. Obama, actually, does not). Clearly though, presidents still choose to make optimistic speeches on what they will accomplish. Maybe they don't realize how short a term 4 years is? Or maybe they think that things will be different when they are in office because they ahve the people's support. I don't really know, those are just a few ideas.

There's a fine line that President's ride between using the inaugural address for attention and popularity and realistically stating their goals. The President has already been elected, so he obviously already has a lot of support. Maybe the President has lofty goals so as to gain support from the people who didn't vote for him. I don't think that the President actually thinks he will accomplish all he says in his address, he just wants to.

In regard to your question about whether the president actually believes that they will accomplish everything they say in their inagural address, I think that they know that most things that they promise will fail. The promises that they make are mainly to gain popularity. Is this really an effective method? Because once they are in office and are not able to carry out their plans their approval ratings are sure to drop.

I will comment because you want to see how I feel about this.

In a way I agree with what you are saying Jordan. That the inagural address is a way to gain popularity as a President.

But why would Obama say that he wants to remove troops, to so call get the public's support, and then not. I think he was honest about this goal but he has not been able to complete it. He wouldn't be lying to gain the public support, he is already in office and his goals can only be honest... So there is no point of lying! He technically already has the support! He's already the president!

“We will begin to responsibly leave Iraq to its people and forge a hard-earned peace in Afghanistan”

He said to remove troops from Iraq...not the middle east in general. Also maybe he meant by bring peace to Afghanistan this includes the increase of troops?

Inaugural addresses seem to be like a pep talk for the next four years.

I do mostly agree with you. I like how Katie explained it as a pep talk for the next four years, It gets the people excited for the new presidents term in office and the president puts hope and optimism into his speech. But like the others said once he gets into office it is much more difficutly to make these promises become reality.

I think every president that delivers his inaugural address knows that some of the goals and ideas he states will fail and not follow through. I think that the purpose of delivering the presidential inaugural address is to establish a positive and optimistic start of the relationship the president will be forming with the American people. It gives the president a chance to express his appreciation for the people that voted and gave him the chance to gain the office of presidency.

The only way to see whats going to happen in the future is with a time machine, one can't possibly do everything they say. Just like what Hilary said its more of a hopeful, optimistic speech. Plus, to solve the worlds problems takes much more than words, and theres no way the crisis in America can be solved with the snap of the fingers. I think that the new technology helps the candidates, it allows them to get their policies out there much more easily, and you have to be popular to become the most known person in the world.
