Recently we have been discussing the issue of the separation of state and religion and using it as an example for our Argumentation unit. We have written essays, outlines, and had discussions about the issue. My personal belief is it is impossible to completely divide and separate religion and government. The articles that Mr. Edmonds provided us that talked about the issue of the separation of church and states provided different views and beliefs on the issue. The side that I stand for is the right and acceptance to combine religion and government together. Religion and government are things that cannot be separated. Whenever a law is created, society adopts and honors a belief that is rooted to religion. The law such as murder is wrong and an act not tolerated in society is a law that is based on the beliefs of almost all religions around the world. When we celebrate the activities of Christmas Anonymous at our public school we are celebrating the holiday of Christmas which is celebrated by Christians around the world. As a nation the celebration of Christmas is widely celebrated by the majority of Americans around the world by Christians and non Christians. If we celebrate Christmas which is a Christian holiday that celebrates our savior’s birth, then how come many people in America argue that the Pledge of Allegiance should not be said in schools because of the phrase “one nation under God.” We live in a society where people choose to include religious ideas and beliefs but deny the fact that it is rooted to a religion. I think that we live in a society where most people do not fully understand the fact that most of our government leaders that sets our society’s laws and standards belong to a religion which serves as their guide when they perform their job. The First Amendment to the Constitution states that “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof” I interpret this statement as the government cannot make a national religion that everyone is forced to follow and worship, however they have the right to incorporate different religious beliefs in their government and at the same time give their citizens the freedom to practice any religion. Religion is something that will always be the guide to how a government is run and the laws and standards that it sets. Religion will always have an influence on how a government is run even if the government bans religious phrases and statues in public buildings the ideas and beliefs of religion will always be incorporated in government laws and standards. It would just be the people’s choice if they want to admit it or not that it is based on one or more religious belief.

Ramon, non-religious people also believe that murder is wrong. Christmas has been diluted over the years, and not everybody celebrates "our savior's" birthday. The constitution does not state or implys that our government has the right to incorporate different religious beliefs.

Most of the laws that were "rooted" in religion aren't really seen as religious anymore. Almost anyone you talk to, religious or not, will tell you that murder is wrong. Just because it was rooted in religion doesn't mean that out government should still incorporate religion. Also, you say that Christmas is celebrated by Christians and non-Christians, which makes it generally nonreligious..?

I agree with Jake. People do not need a religion to know that murder is wrong. The same goes for stealing. I think that without religion people would eventually figure out that they would be better off if they did not kill eachother and take eachother's stuff. There should be a seperation of church and state so that people can make their own decisions regarding religion rather than being imposed on by the government.

a seperation between church was originally ment to keep government imposing on religious worship (no matter Christian or not) . The "wall" if you will between church and state is to keep government from telling you how, what, who, and where to worship. Religion is apart of peoples lives, no matter if you "have it" or not it affects the desicions you make. You must take everything into account when deciding how to run a country. Religion will be in politics whether you like it or not, even if you say you are not religious you have still made a "religious decision" by choosing not to belive in anything and aim to get through life by yourself. It is a big part of peoples lives and society, you can not make a life decison when only half of a persons life is taken into account.

Oh and i agree with Jake that Christmas has been diluted by society from what it is originally suppose to celebrate. You can celebrate Christmas if you are Christian or not. Its what you mean when you celebrate christmas. You can celebrate it because of the birth of the savior Jesus Christ, and what an amazing gift that was (yes we throw some fun santa claus stuff in there to :D) That would be a Christan holiday. If your version of christmas is just santa clause and gifts and remove the meaning and Jesus from it then no i would not consider it Christian. It all depends on your intent as to whether it is Christian or not.
does this make any sense?

The government and the church are not directly connected. The government cannot be run by any one religion and religions cannot be run by the government. However, People in government need to be moral and ethical, and it just so happens that most religious people have those qualities.

Religion is everywhere. You cannot stop people from believing or keep religious people out of the government. As long as the two are run separately, not by one another, we will all be okay whether or not we believe in the true meaning of Christmas.

i see where you are coming from but there needs to be that seperation to keep views from different religions clouding leaders decions.

The line “one nation under God.” in one of the readings was argued as acceptable because of its constant use and thus has lost its religious affiliation. Also many laws we have are based off of common morals (similar to what Jake said) Murder is wrong and thus illegal. I also believe that any law that was at one time "rooted in religion" is no longer viewed that way because of its commonality. A seperation between church and state is more as away to remove discrimination. If our country declared to be a christian nation today in some way someone would decide that it means that everyone christian is better than people with other beliefs. It would just cause a bunch of problems that the country doesnt need.
