Iowa campaign ad spending

This article found in last night's Post-Bulletin is a must read if you are planning on taking the AP Gov't test. There is so much good stuff in here about campaign finance, parties, the electorate etc.
     -$30 million in ads
-$480 spent per undecided voter in Iowa (a recliner for all!!!)
-Campaign finance references galor (Citizens United and the Supreme Court)
     -"retail campaigning"

Here are the links to some sites we reference later in the semester but since the article brings them up now, feel free to access them. They will be important later as well!

Real Clear Politics - a plethora of info and data on the upcoming election. Tons of articles, the most recent polls, etc.
ElectoralVote.com - we have looked at this site in class. The most recent polls and projections. Explore and enjoy.
OpenSecrets.org - Want to find out what it costs to be president, a US Senator, a Congressman? Want to find out where all this money comes from and who donates? Check the people on your street and see who the big campaign donors are in your neighborhood. It is all public knowledge.

Good Day fellow APLGers

Use the following readings to construct your abstract.

Hobbes A Student’s History of Philosophy
Hobbes Ch. 13 of Leviathan
Locke Second Treatise excerpts
Thucydides History of the Peloponnesian War
Aristotle Politics
Plato Allegory of the Cave
Machiavelli The Prince
Rousseau The Social Contract
Imagine you find a bottle washed up on a shore. Inside is a lengthy letter which upon further review you discover is from  a) a philosopher to a leader or b) a leader to a philosopher.
After reading the letter, you are to write an abstract that you will turn in to me. (250 words)

“An abstract is a self-contained, short, and powerful statement that describes a larger work. Components vary according to discipline; an abstract of a social science or scientific work may contain the scope, purpose, results, and contents of the work. An abstract of a humanities work may contain the thesis, background, and conclusion of the larger work. An abstract does not evaluate the work being abstracted. While it contains key words found in the larger work, the abstract is an original document rather than an excerpted passage.” (UNC Writing Center)

Abstracts allow readers who may be interested in a longer work to quickly decide whether it is worth their time to read it.

Abstract is to be typed, worth 50 points,  and due Sept. 21st!   (I would also really prefer if the leader was not Pres Obama! Get a bit more creative!)

Let me know if you have questions,
Mr. Thompson
