Political Ideology
Go ahead and take the quiz. At the end, you will get a description of who you are based on your answers to the questions. Post a comment based on what you found out about yourself. Be sure to comment on how these results compare with the results of the survey we took in class. Pay attention to how you responded to the question and the topic of the questions as this could only help when it comes time for us to take our Political Ideology quiz next week. This is an assignment and it must be completed before we take our ideology quiz in class.

When I took the quiz I scored 7.24 left, 1.43 libertarian and was described as left moderate social libertarian. The first quiz had me in a position of being significantly more left-leaning than this quiz I just described. There are some opinions that I haven't formed as strongly yet which contributed in the more moderate result. This is probably due to the difference of absolute answer and nuanced answers between the two quizzes

I took a few of the quizzes. Overall, the answers were relatively consistent, a moderate conservative. I feel that some the of quizzes gave better results than the one we took in class because they provide less definitive answers. Also, there were some political areas I do not have much of a stand on, so that may have swayed my answer some. The first quiz on the post put me at 89% conservative, while political compass put me at 1.25 for Left/Right. There are both relatively close to my in-class score of 14, although the GoToQuiz results were much higher. I liked these quizzes because they were often less definitive and less racist/redneck/cruel sounding on the conservative views.

Some of the questions on the GoToQuiz did challenge me make me think about things that I never put much thought to before.
Some of the answers pandering to total communism were amusing, such as, in regards to the US being the only first world country hostile towards evolution, "This is no surprise. The United States, being the most capitalistic country in the West, is also has a society which is unlikely to view things analytically. This preserves the position of powerful capitalists in the market." I'd be flabbergasted if that was anyone's actual viewpoint.
I was rated a Social Democrat which I kind of already knew I was. I found that some of the questions were too vague, but I did appreciate the spectra of choices for answers instead of the A or B type of quiz we took in class.

I took a few of the quizzes, each of which were relatively consistant, and placed me as a moderate conservative. The compass quiz, which gave levels of aggreement, placed me as about 2.5 consevative and about 1 authoritarian. I felt that this was relatively accurate placement, although another quiz placed me as being more libetarian. The neat thing about these quizzes, as opposed to the one in class was that these were much more specific, and for a couple of them gave more than two options, which I liked as I usually found my self not fully for or against an idea, but rather somewhere in between. They were also much more in depth in their analysis and explainations, using graphs and other visuals, which I found pretty interesting.

I took all of these quizzes, and I was just right of center on all of them, which I feel is pretty accurate. The first quiz on this post labelled me a "centrist moderate social authoritarian", with scores right 0.91 and authoritarian 2.84. This is close to the 16 I got on the in class quiz, just a little closer to center because the questions weren't so extreme. None of my results surprised me at all. I also found that a few of the statements were things I had never thought about and/or didn't seem very relevant to politics. One thing I thought was odd was that when I viewed the comparison by demographicsnon the first quiz, it had some of the most conservative states (Texas, Oklahoma) as left of center...I think it is based only on who has taken that quiz though, and chances are Republicans in those states don't need to take a quiz to know they are Republican so that may be why.

I took two of the quizzes, which both gave me a similar result to my 20 in class from a liberal/conservative standpoint. I probably appeared slightly more moderate than I did in our in-class quiz because the questions had more answers to choose from than just A or B. On the first quiz I was equally conservative and libertarian (75%). I scored a right 2.13 and a social libertarian -2.36 on the political compass quiz, which identifies me most as a moderate libertarian. I found some of the questions a little irrelevant ("Is abstract art really art?") but overall found my results to be accurate.
Kellie Frost
Hmm... So in class I was placed as a moderate conservative, an assessment I agreed with, but taking the first quiz I was placed as a 78% liberal, an assessment I do not agree with because for some answers I only agreed with part of one answer and was resigned to picking that one.
I also took the Political Compass quiz, though I feel that the test was inaccurate for not having a "neutral" position; some things I did not have opinions on, such as bottled water and the buying of land, because I have never known or seen anything different. I also do not see the political implications of such questions so it may have falsely swayed my results.
I found myself splitting some answers even further into nuance such as "When you are troubled, it's better not to think about it, but to keep busy with more cheerful things"; that not an agree or disagree answer. Also, "What is your general opinion on the government?"; that cannot be broken down into one of five answers that accurately describes my opinion on government.
Overall I agree the most with the quiz from class, slightly more liberal economically and most conservative socially, ending as a moderate conservative.
Aaron Kapinos
I ended up taking both the Go To Quiz, which labeled me as conservative, and the Political Ideology Survey, which labeled me as a moderate. I feel the combination of these two results describes me fairly well. My score on the in-class quiz was a 10, which can be considered moderate with a slight edge to being liberal. I partially agree with that because I do tend to see myself more moderate but instead with an edge to being conservative. Possibly the reason why the two online quizzes were more accurate is because there were more options to choose on the Go To quiz, and there were different agree/disagree questions on the Political Ideology survey. The only reason why I have tended to find myself more conservative is because of personal opinions I have made on only certain issues that are always on the news or being debated. However these quizzes forced me to quickly consider certain topics that I hadn't really thought about, and now I know the wide range of topics that are considered when someone is being labeled liberal or conservative.
Emma Christensen
I ended up taking all of the quizzes in order to get a better idea of where i stand. The Go to quiz labeled be as a liberal which is kind of accurate but i tend to think of myself as a moderate but a little left leaning. My score in class was a 10 which i think describes me accurately as well since it does show me as a little left leaning. I am more strongly left leaning on domestic policy, economic, social, environmental, healthcare, and educational issues. Although, I am more conservative when it comes to religion/faith ideals. Another quiz that accurately describes me well was the Political Ideology quiz which labeled me as a moderate and the Political Typology which labeled me as Faith and Family left which is correct. All of the quizzes i took and the in-class quiz were are all precise descriptions on where i politically stand although the political ideology quiz was a little more so because of the extensive amount of questions. Overall, the quizzes made me question economic issues today and helped me better understand my perception of the world politically.

This GoToQuiz was an interesting one to take.It challenge my ideologies and past beliefs all the while exploring topics I haven't generally thought of before. The test in APLG defined me as more left leaning at 8 out of 25 points. This was fairly accurate. I don't always agree with things but most of the time i do. As for the GoToQuiz I was labeled as 88% Liberal, "You believe in the role of the government to fight poverty, both by means of welfare programs, and economic regulation. You are defined as a progressive in the US, but you are generally favouring of the retention of the current social paradigm." I can see this but again I can't. Some of the questions I only agreed with half of the question and others I don't at all.
-Thomas Trahan
The GoToQuiz classified me as 74% Conservative, which was fairly close to the in-class assessment. Of course the problem with these sort of quizzes is that your answer might not be one of the specified 5, leaving you to choose the answer you disagree with the least, and in the end giving you a result that might not be totally accurate. Such is life.
--Jenna Milligan
I feel that all the quizzes I took (the in-class quiz, go to quiz, political typology, and political ideology quiz) described me very well. While I was labelled more liberally in class the political ideology quiz sided me with the moderate liberals, which shows that I have tendencies to also lean toward the moderate side. This can be explained by my results in the political typology quiz which labelled me as a Faith and Family left. (Shout-out to that quiz for being exactly right!) The go to quiz put me into the liberal group by a 91% match, but this quiz didn't include religious issues that I am very passionate about, so that could explain why I was put into this group. I actually I already knew where I stood before taking these quizzes, but it was interesting to see what they got right or wrong about me.
-Khiara Las
I am a "far-left social libertarian."
Left: 7.69, Libertarian: 5.37
I'm not really surprised? I mean, I think that by this point I've realized that I'm most certainly not conservative, but I'm not going to score 420% liberal because I'll always have that little bit of conservative in my views on foreign policy that Chinese people tend to have. I'm not very interested in the libertarian part, though-- I trust the government to regulate things. I think the questions are more loaded on this quiz-- the question on foreign policy that asks if we should intervene if "one group is slaughtering another group" is really biased. It's not like the US's bombings of the Middle East haven't killed thousands of innocent civillians; someone should really be stepping in to stop us. My results on this quiz (far left) lined up well with my other quiz (1).
The quiz we were required to take said I was 3.5 left and .76 authoritarian. This is not quite as far left as the quiz we took in class said I was. This doesn't really surprise me due to the variety of options and the option to declare how important certain issues were to me. So while I am not as far left leaning as our class test said, I definitely agree that I am more left leaning but still quite close to being moderate. My cultural result was 4.5 to the left which does not surprise me in the slightest seeing as a lot of the people I surround myself with consider themselves left leaning. My foreign policy leaned more towards neo-interventionalist, which once again doesn't surprise me seeing as I don't feel very strongly about either side. Overall while our class test said I was pretty far left, in reality I am much more moderate.
Ryan Movall
The GoToQuiz classified me as a more right-leaning person at a score of 76% conservative; however, the quiz we took in class I scored an 11/25. The in-class quiz that we took scored me almost in the middle, but slightly left-leaning, and the GoToQuiz placed me farther right on the spectrum. I believe this is due to the multiple options on the GoToQuiz in which may have made my score more accurate, as opposed to the very blunt and direct in-class quiz.
Brandon Ratzloff
The Political Ideology quiz placed me as a Moderate even though the quiz we took in class placed me as "radically" liberal with a score of 1/25. After the in class quiz,I knew I'd be a bit more conservative. The Political Typology quiz labeled me a "Solid Liberal." My political compass is apparently close to Gandhi's. The I side With test said that I agree with Hillary Clinton 91% of the time. Considering my upbringing, I'm not surprised of how liberal I am. However, I feel that the Political Ideology was a bit more accurate because of the structure of the questions.
The Political Ideology quiz defined me as a Social Democrat (or Democratic Socialist). This is essentially the same label as what I got from the quiz we took in class (score of 0). I'd say that both of thee quizzes aligned pretty well with my beliefs, and I'd classify myself in the same categories that the quizzes did. I believe I've been classified so absolutely to the left because I've put a lot of thought and research into developing my opinions and know pretty confidently where I stand with my beliefs.
Kristen Hansen
The GoToQuiz classified me as a Social Democrat with a score of 81% while the in class quiz gave me a score of 4/25. I had similar results on both tests and I would agree with the fact that I am very liberal and lean far to the left. The quiz in class only had two options for answers, and although I received very similar results, I appreciated having a wide variety of answers that covered extremes as well as the middle ground for each topic. I already knew my political beliefs, but it was still interesting to take the quiz and see the results.
Sara Burnap
The political ideology quiz placed me as a Social Democrat with a score of 86%. This did not surprise me at all, considering I scored 1/25 on the in-class quiz last week. I would agree with both of these labels, as I am usually all about helping others to make our country overall as successful as possible. I was slightly surprised, however, that I received a whole 4% in Radical Right/Fascist because I rarely agree with strong conservative opinions.
-Hannah Walker
I was labeled by the Political Ideology quiz as a Social Democrat with a score of 92%. I found this surprising because I was so far left, but in class I received a score of 3. I would not necessarily agree with this due to the fact that I am still trying to decide what I believe in for myself.
Hannah Lucey
These political ideology quizzes consistently placed me on the left of the political spectrum, but I was slightly more moderate than the in class quiz, which placed me at 4/25. The wide spectrum of answers provided in each quiz allowed me to choose where I felt I belonged on the spectrum; I was not forced to pick between two absolutes. Generally I felt that these online quizzes provided a better picture of my ideology than the in class quiz.
Tim Brown
With the survey we did in class I scored a 9/25 and was mostly in the middle. With this quiz that I just took, I was given the score of 93% liberal which is very different from my first score. In the first survey I was just leaning slightly toward the liberal side but with this quiz it tells me that I have mainly liberal viewpoints. Most of the questions from the online quiz provided more answers to choose from which helped to determine that I am more liberal
Abby Anderson
I took the political compass quiz as I've actually made it a habit of taking it on a monthly basis to see if/how I shift over time
Score on 9/09/14 (First Time)
Economic Left/Right: -4.44
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -3.86
Score on 12/17/2015 (Last independent time)
Economic Left/Right: -3.11
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -3.02
Score on 1/11/2016 (Today)
Economic Left/Right: -2.63
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: -3.74
Class Quiz:
Fiscal: 2/10
Social: 8/15
This is an interesting result for me because the class quiz leaned me slightly conservative on social issues, but I've consistently scored liberal on this specific political quiz. I find it also a bit weird that I scored 2/10 on fiscal, but I've been getting closer to middle and leaning right over time. This kinda is like what Thompson said about getting money making people more likely to want to keep your own as I've had a few more opportunities to make my own money recently, but the class quiz still pegs me as a decently far liberal whereas the political compass, puts me more moderate with slight liberal leanings. It might be a result of more questions and different options to express self, but it is an interesting way to track yourself over time
Alex Ngov
From what I scored on the survey we took in class- which I got 3/25- I was labeled as a liberal, which I don't mind because I believe that we're all in the same boat together just waiting to get shipwrecked by responsibilities. Anyways, for the online quiz I received a label of a social democrat, which I found fairly accurate to what I envisioned myself to be. As to compare both quizzes side by side, I would say that the online one is much more accurate that the class one as it provided more options as to where you lie on this political scale. Just like abortion it's a spectrum.
-Darren Anes DyQuiangco
WOops forgot to mention I was 88% social democrat (66% liberal, 56% communist/radical left, 10% fascist/radical right, 8% libertarian, and 2% conservative)
-Darren A.D.Q again
These quizzes were indeed helpful, as most everyone is saying, in that they had more of a spectrum of answers for each question. However, I felt that I did not know enough to answer to questions completely (I have no idea who Ludwig von Mises is). With the questions not as clear cut/definite on this quiz, I got a much less radical score than my class score. I am left leaning, but this quiz indicated that my view is more moderate than the class quiz would have me think (but less so than I thought of myself previously). The main thing I took away from this quiz is how little I actually know about political issues.

I was more liberal than I was in the test we took in class according to this, truthfully I try not to align myself with a party and disagree with the system, but I'm closer to the liberal side on this survey while in class I was more center-set. I also apparently am a moderate social authoritarian which I agree with more minorly than moderately I think, and I also scored a 0.45 (leaning towards neo-conservative) so I'm basically directly in the center because I don't really care for either side which I'd say is pretty true considering everything I know about politics and government in depth I have learned this semester in class.
I was rated a Social Democrat by the online quiz with a 93% score. Which was not surprising as I was already a "lily-livered, bleeding heart, liberal, egghead, communist." This correlated with my "in class score" of 1/25. I found the only conservative answer on the quiz I gave was the one regarding affirmative action. In regards to affirmative action, I understand the premise and the intended purpose but in a way it segregates our collective human ability. Speaking bluntly, I disagree with it on the grounds that it seems to suggest that there's black people talent and white people talent which creates an inferiority complex for me. I want to be recognized or chosen for my ability not race or ethnicity.
The results that I received in class and on the quiz were roughly what I predicted for myself prior to actually taking them. The score from class put me at a 7/25, which was pretty liberal but less so compared to the rest of the class, which is perhaps what skewed my prediction for myself. The test online placed me at 78%, a Social Democrat. I agree with its assessment stating that I have a Liberal mindset and wish to broaden social programs and progressive taxes to alleviate social inequality.
For the survey that we took in class I got a 16/25 which is in the moderate numbers but still pretty conservative. The online quiz showed that I am libertarian with a score of 93%. Comparing this with the in-class survey it is not surprising that the online quiz resulted in 82% conservative and just 15% liberal.
When we took the test in class, at first I was surprised because I ended up having more liberal views when it came to the social issues vs. economic ones, whereas I expected myself to be more in the middle. I got 5/10 in the economic issues and 1/10 in the social category. I would still consider myself a moderate, because for the Political Ideologies survey my results were 80% liberal, but underneath that it also said I am 74% conservative. When I vote in November next year I'm going to choose the name I write on the ballot based on my own personal morals and views, not the political party next to the candidate's name, because I clearly can't count on internet quizzes to tell me which party I belong in.
I got 90 percent social democrat on the quiz. This did not surprise me, and I believe that it was more accurate than the one we did in class. This quiz presented me with a wider variety of options than the black and white opinions that the class quiz had. While this did not quite equate to 0/25, I received 0% as a conservative, showing my crazy liberal tendencies. All in all, I think these quizzes just reaffirmed what I already knew; "We all do better when we all do better".
Sorry Trump, doesn't look like you're getting my vote.
I ended up getting 77% social democrat and the title "moderate liberal" on the second survey. This was to be expected after my score of 3/25 on the in class essay; during both instances I noticed that if there were any questions for which I leaned towards the right, they were mainly social issues. I preferred the second survey a lot more because it gave me a wide range of options and allowed me to express my reasoning for my answers through the options. All in all, the results for both the online ones and the in-class one were not too far off from each other.
It's 4:30 AM, I'm really tired.

No more Mr. Undecided... In class I scored almost the very middle, receiving a 12/25. After taking the goto quiz, my conservative beliefes shown through a tad more. I scored an 86% conservative rating on the quiz. I believe this is due to the fact that the questions were more neutral and provided more options than the ones we did in class.
-Joe Devlin
"After taking the quiz, I was rated 87% social democrat. I am definitely not surprised by this result because I identify myself as a strong liberal. On another quiz, I was rated as a "strong liberal" considering I received a 0 on the class survey- this wasn't shocking to me. I idenitfy myself as a liberal because I believe that the government should continue to spend money on welfare programs, and the progressive tax system is the best for the U.S. Economy."
Asha
Well, not surprised what I got. I scored an 80% social democrat. To be honest though, there were some conservative ideas I had such as funding our military to protect our country from threats and being able to keep a gun under the 2nd amendment. As far as my liberal side however, thats a whole different story. With many social issues in this country, I believe that there are hose who need the help, but ONLY for those who need it. This quiz was similar to the one we took in class but had a lot more options to choose from. Through those options, there were many paths into what my ideology lies. All in all, this quiz I thought was much better in discovering your political ideology
- David Nguyen

According to the quiz online I am 91% liberal- which is no big surprise at all. The score was fairly congruent with the quiz we had in class in which I got 2 of 25. However, there were some questions on the online quiz I didn't feel too comfortable with considering my vast knowledge on political terms and issues (note the sarcasm). Asides from being a liberal, I am 80% social democrat, 34% communist/radical left, 12% fascist/radical right, 11% conservative, and 10% libertarian. Again, there is no surprise at all, disregarding my initiate response to reading communist. Overall , the quizzes were close to each other concerning the results and I believe were fairly accurate representation.
-Joshua Anes Dy Quiangco
Unsurprisingly I am 77% Liberal with 68% in social democratic. It matched with the in class survey where I got a 6. Both of witch I felt were accurate representations of my beliefs.
-Samuel Wheeler
After taking the GoToQuiz, I received a score of 66% social democrat and 78% liberal. This quiz reflects my ideology because I consider myself liberal and lean left on most issues. In class I scored an 8/25, so receiving the result of liberal on the quiz was expected. When we were put in groups in class I was in the moderate group, but with an 8 I was right on the edge of being in the liberal group. The GoToQuiz better expresses my political ideology because it gave more answers to choose from. If I chose to take more of these quizzes I'm guessing they would all give my about the same answer; I lean to the left.
Andi Stensland
on the go to quiz i scored 85% social democrat, which makes sense, considering the 3/25 i scored on the first quiz, and how much i love taxes and hate the second amendment
-collin
I scored a 4 on the test we took in class. On the online test I score as a socialist liberal with 66%. I am a minority teenager dependent and therefore fiscally and socially the results make sense. I want change in the power system that places certain people above others. I believe capitalism emphasizes this power structure and I think a shift in the socialist direction would help that. Through this test I realized that I don't identify as democrat because I want certain things done but the party system has just increased polarization and conflict. These are my beliefs and if this makes me liberal so be it.

On the political quiz in class I scored a zero. When I took all four quizzes I consistently came up as a Solid Liberal (and Socialist Liberal) which to me is consistent with my beliefs. I believe in change and adaptation of the government to meet the social and financial needs of the people, even if it means higher taxes and restricting laws on ownership of weapons. Personally I found that the quizzes gave better options that provided more in-depth questions that I can relate to and believe in for instance; I believe that our current government should incorporate some socialist practices (i.e higher taxes but with improved education, medical funding, etc.) that have proven highly effective in European nations. Obviously I identify as a far left liberal/democrat and am proud of it
-Mitchell
I scored a 92% conservative on the ideology quiz. I'm not surprised I scored so high, considering I got an 18/25 on the one done in class. I've been brought up in a conservative house, so my parents political views have rubbed off on me. Plus, my religious views make me a conservative on social issues.
-Jonathan Terpstra
I got 88% liberal on the quiz, and a 2/25 on the in class quiz. This is statistically likely, as I am a young, educated, female minority. On the political compass, I got a economically left leaning, (-4.0) social libertarian (-6.0), while on the in class quiz I was 0/10 for fiscal and 2/25 for social. I believe the former is more accurate as while I am fairly liberal for both, I believe that I am more liberal about social issues than economic issues.
I got a 85% liberal on the online quiz, and I scored a 0/25 on the quiz we took in class. This makes sense because the questions on the online quiz had many possible answers that fell into the grey area, while the one from class only had two choices. I think the online quiz was more accurate for me because of this variety of choices that was available. The fact that I scored very liberal on each of the quizzes does not suprise me becuase I am a middle class female who grew up in a democratic home. The combination of my upbringing and life experiences has definetly influenced my left leaning position.

Hey there, it's Kevin Andrews here; I'm recovering from a terrible virus that has kept me bed-ridden, and I realized that the blog post that I composed before it was due had never sent--even after composing an entirely new blog post, my second attempt apparently didn't work because I was using a mobile device? Whatever. I absolutely hate technology: it never works how it should; funny enough, there's something that also doesn't work how it should, and it's called Communism--of course I'm only making a joke based off of a very cold war era version of what communism means, but I still don't like it. If I'm doing what I'm supposed to be doing, and Joe Shmoe isn't doing what he should be doing, then why should Joe Shmoe get the same as me? That's a simplistic view of the whole thing, but that's what I think. The quiz told me I'm "76% Jonathan Terpstra and Kellie Frost" (they're both conservative, get it? Lol.), and "0% Brett Herbers and Kristen Hansen" (because the quiz actually means "very liberal" when it says "communist"). I know that I'm liberal on certain social issues, and so I'm not really sure how much that plays into what ideology I actually am, and who I should be voting for.
This is much longer than I intended it to be, but I hope it is thoughtful enough for the full point value this assignment is worth.
Sincerely,
A Guy Who Got Out Of Bed To Go To His Computer To Write This Blog Post So That He Would Get Some Points That Will Benefit His Overall Semester Grade In Such An Infinitesimal Way That It Is A Wonder Why He Spent Such Time Composing Such A Ridiculous Draft And Perhaps It Is Because Laughter Is The Best Medicine Or Perhaps Because Twitter Is Pretty Slow At Forty-Three Minutes Past Noon
