Freedom of Speech

James Madison in Federalist No. 10 wrote about how to solve differences between factions, ". . .one, by destroying the liberty which is essential to its existence; the other, by giving to every citizen the same opinions, the same passions, and the same interests."

Ideally, the same will apply here. We would rather not censor speech, but submit it to the populace to respond. So, take the responsibility to advocate positions thoughtfully. Be warned about responding too personally -- this is not the forum for such items, as they can not be objectively discussed without strong emotions.

In my most humble opinion, the government should not be allowed to censor anything or anyone. However people should have to clearly pre-present their bias before stating opinions as facts. Everyone does it, not just liberals, but conservatives too. The government, or some form of organization should establish a way for the common citizen to figure out if a person/publication/television news team is biased to the left/right. I not against biased reporting, I'm against hidden biased reporting.

Never underestimate the power of a large group of stupid people

The founding fathers also realized that the masses were not always going to be educated and not always going to be smart enough to determine the best choice or what to believe that is why the electoral college was established, i dont think they had full belief in the mob to make its own decisions

i just realized what I wrote sounds very immature, this isn't how i personally veiw free speech but i think it's an important point to consider in the equation for finding a perfect delicate balance.

example of how not censoring free speech is dangerous......most likely limitations on speech are never going to be to the extreme of limiting one's speech in their own home but from experience in being a nanny, and as a CAP student this year it is so evident where a child's language and behavior comes from....and that is from their parents. obviously parenting styles differ as does what is said in each household....but that sponge of a child's mind soaks up everything and is later revealed. ex0bad language, racism, discrimination etc. television (media) works in the same way as parenting....it reflects society and what is being taught to young citizens....these actions of the young citizens reflect what is on TV (media). free speech influences others and can hurt them or help them understand the realities of society....can there be limits on free speech in households and keep a stronger hold on TV/radio censorship so our future generations of America do not grow up to be someone in society American does not want as a respectable citizen...?
