United Fruit Company
Nothing fancy to this link, just some background for you on United Fruit. Interesting company, especially when you can link the political authorities connected, eh?
Here's the book we excerpted today.
And a bit on magical realism that's rather pedestrian. Some images with soundtrack here (identify the muzak for extra cred). I'm personally much more interested in the post-colonial condemnations of the term (and here).
Arpita and Mr. Swegarden speaking tommorrow night!
Oh, and Chelsea, would you believe I had to take Spanish six times to pass it thrice!?!? I am however, proud of two moments I learned it rather quickly. 1. While watching sea turtles lay eggs on a beach, a Costa Rican soldier aimed his rifle at me and began yelling questions at me. 2. When I stayed at a home in Paraguay and wouldn't receive food unless I spoke in Spanish, with the formal tense!! Portuguese, however, is another story for another time.

That is most definately fire and rain by James Taylor.
mr. decker you would not have lasted 5 minutes in my exchange family. they didn't even understand aaaaaaany english at all. good times with me not knowing that before i went there. i got way better at spanish way fast. and they also only use formal (ud.) in the area in costa rica i was in, so that confused me briefly, but now i just have to think really hard to remember informal.
but seriously, if you need pronunciation help...;)
First of all, I wasn't aware that United Fruit Company was an actually existing company. The Banana company confuses me in OHYOS because I thought it was just to bring Bananas to Macondo but then all the sudden you have a train, railroad, a union, mechanics, doctors, and lots of other types of workers.
I love the idea of Magical Realism. The idea that you can have a world full of fantasy and magic but also stay grounded in the realism of life at the same time is a really nice thought. The line in OHYOS "Time passes." "But not so much." seems like magical realism to me. The novel always alludes to time passing and going through the generations of Beundias but you notice that their are certain characters that are almost reborn because of their same characteristics. The fact that time doesn't seem to have passed makes it magical but then the fact that it has indeed passed makes it realism. Hopefully that sentence made sense.
Also, I really enjoyed the speeches by Mr. Swegarden and Arpita and Monica.
