The Costs of War
A big part of what we study in our unit on Congress is taxes and spending. Congress controls the purse strings. A report released by a Joint Committee (you'll learn what a joint committee is later) estimates the cost to US taxpayers of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. This is the one part of the class where most of the students get the most upset...our national debt, our yearly deficits and the future of America's youth who inherit this spending.

Articles like this disgust me because all of this money is being spent and our country is going farther and farther into debt. It hurts to think about where this country will be in fifty years when i'm retired or getting ready to retire and everything has fallen apart because of the political actions of today. I feel like I have no way to change this world or persuade these politicians to support the things that will make the earth habitable in the future. It's sad they spend all this money on wars we aren't winning and fighting each other in Washington D.C.
Yeah I get the same feeling. Voting really seems like a pick your poison situation (especially so if it's clinton vs. giuliani). I supported the democrats' election to majority in congress but now they are hardly making any progress on the war or the unprecedented debt our country is in.
"The United Nations estimates that the cost to end world hunger, along with diseases related to hunger and poverty, is about $195 billion a year." from Freerice.com
It's nice to see we have our priorities.
