As we head into our unit on "The Influences on Government" a new article today detailing the money available to the Democratic and Republican candidates.

Extra Credit for the first person to correctly respond with why so much attention is being paid to Iowa and New Hampshire. For example the article mentions how many TV ads certain candidates aired in Iowa alone.

There is so much attention paid to Iowa and New Hampshire because they will hold the first primaries for the presidential election. Winning those will most likely affect how people vote in the following primaries for other states

It makes me sick to think how much money people are spending on these campaigns.

Also, the significance of small states such as Iowa and New Hampshire is that the regular person-to-person communication is more significant than the barrage of media that is subjected to the people. This can very strongly negate the "advantage" of candidates who are very financially strong. Thus, when a low polling candidate surges out of them, we can be reasonably confident that it wasn’t only money that accomplished it.

That is, the effect that they have left in the states through their campaigning and actions speak for their candidacies; their ability to directly communicate with every common man.

Iowa and N.H. are important states in elections because they are traditionally known as swing states; there are no candidates or political parties that are greatly preferred. To candidates, these states have a lot of potential; their electoral votes could go either way, where as a state like Texas will quite certainly remain Conservative and Republican forever.
