Federalism, not Partition
Wow a possible solution for Iraq...maybe!?
Since you are now all familiar with the term "Federalism" or "Federal System" here is an editorial relating this principle and the government in Iraq. The US Senate voted recently to de-centralize the Iraqi gov't. Some interpretted that to mean Iraq to be divided into 3 sovereign entities. This article clarifies the intent of that Senate vote and speaks of federalism. A great article to be read as we start our study of federalisma nd our own Constitution.
Federalism, not Partition
Mr. Thompson
"In a series of opinions from the Office of Legal Counsel that were written by conservative zealot John Yoo but signed by his superiors, conventional understandings about the meaning of the Constitution were turned on their heads." Newsweek book reviews.
citation for drug facts I mentioned in class (5 yrs, not 15 years), heard Tuesday by the US Supreme Court:
The 100-to-1 disparity: The law includes what critics have called a 100-to-1 disparity: Trafficking in 5 grams of crack cocaine carries a mandatory five-year prison sentence, but it takes 500 grams of cocaine powder to warrant the same sentence.
Why? What could possibly be the defense of this 24 year old law?

I think it would be very interesting to see how Iraq would handle an Articles-of-Confederation-esque government seeing as their situation is so much different than ours was post-revolutionary times. Perhaps all it really needed was a bit of sectarian religious disagreement.

Great addition Mr. Decker. It really will be interesting to see what the future holds for the powers of the president. As for you APLG'ers, just wait until we start talking about implied powers, executive agreements, executive privilege and executive orders. Then we'll see the dander fly. (if you aren't sure about the terms listed above, look them up they are all in your text)
I vote we get excerpts from these books for our next power readings.
When reading the first article I keep thinking back to Plato's idea of enlightenment and if we have a responsibility to enforce our "knowledge" on others or if we are only supposed to share it, and let them either use it or leave it.
