Briefly: Identify one paradigm that Friedman indicates (either from the video or reading)has shifted. Next, choose one of the following and respond : Who/what goes to zero if they still follow the old paradigm? What is a rule for success under the new paradigm? What is a great opportunity (not challenge) of the new paradigm?

One paradigm from the reading was that the US always wins the gold in basketball at the Olympics. However, even after switching from using NCAA players to NBA players we still earned only the Bronze medal. We thought we would always have the edge in olympic basketball but this paradigm has recently shifted.

We go to zero if we follow the old paradigm, we being the US, because we don't win. The new rule for sucess is to practice harder and develop new techniques to beat the other teams, and the new opportunity we have is to improve our college and pro ball players' skills.
One paradigm that stood out to me was that there used to be just three major trading blocs; North America, Western Europe, and Japan plus East Asia.
This changed when the Berlin Wall came down. The global economic world was now made up by North America, Western Eurpose, Japan, and parts of Latin America, Africa and East Asia.
The economy will go to zero if we do not follow the new paradigm. By excluding the 1.5 billion new workers; 150 million of which have the education and connectivity to compete at this level you would only be cutting the economy short and costing many jobs and opprotunites throughout the world. The rule for success would be to accept the changing economy and take advantafe of everything it has to offer.

One of the most evident, along with a high level of importance, is the paradigm of the new "internet age." This paradigm creates a great opportunity because people used to not be able to communicate ideas on the global scale very easily. Now, many discoveries can be made due to the global community that has emerged from the spread of the web.
A paradigm I found on page 325 was that many people thought they could get rich quick and without a lot of work, after the dot-com boom.
A rule for success under the new paradigm was having to work hard and getting a good education to achieve success, and probably having it take a long time.

A paradigm in the reading is that for a long time, the amount of education that we have received in the US has been sufficient. We haven't had any competition until recently, when certain other countries have stepped up their education programs and are working alot harder than we are. I guess the paradigm would be that we now need to work harder to get what we want, and if our system doesn't improve, we will go back to zero and probably not be experienced enough to be competetive in the global market. An opportunity for us is to be able to possibly adapt to the new paradigm and reclaim some of our positions in the jobs market.

A paradigm I identified on page 332 that is shifting is that a good chunk of America's science and engineering labor force consists of foreigners.
However, now that this is shifting, the foreigners are investing their work in world-class companies at home and S&E workforce and education rates for the US will go back to zero if we don't follow a new rule for success.
That rule could be something as easy as more young people going into scientific research involving global warming and its prevention. Not only would our workforce increase but it would be very beneficial! :)

Another paradigm about basketball from the reading is what then "good" players do. A while ago a good basketball player was someone who has a good shoot from anywhere, makes good passes, and plays smart. Today the paradigm of a "good" basketball player is someone who keeps the ball and shoots a three pointer or drives the lane and dunks it. In this case the people who go back to zero are the players who can't dunk, are not good at threes, but play smart, see the court, and have a good inside shot.
The old paradigm: That the U.S. government has the time and means to devote to sports related drug issues and "trying to take apart the old New Deal."
The fact that the CHINESE government had immediately begun to implement the Innovate AMERICA report into its own plans should have been a clear indication that this paradigm has shifted.
The obvious rule for success (or at least getting out of this somewhat embarrassing crisis) is to reroute the resources into building a huge science and engineering education program.
"A crisis is a terrible thing to waste" :-)
Under the old paridgm the US believed that they would always be leading in science and research. New rule-To be successful the country needs to have strong science and math education programs to be able to compete globaly.
In the WIF 3.0 video, freidman talks about the protocol revolution that occured in the 90s.
the old paradigm there was that different countries wouldn't be able to talk to each other, even after the internet went public with netscape. Now, everyone who doesn't take advantage of possible international collaboration through the internet goes back to zero.

A paradigm shift happened when the Berlin Wall came down. It allowed the global economic world to expand. A great opportunity that came from this was the inclusion of 6 billion people into the economic world. It also had China shift to a market capitalism and 1.5 billion more people joined the economic labor force.

A paradigm that has shifted, or is shifting, that Friedman mentioned in video is that the green revolution that people thought was happening isn't really a revolution. The ways we are going green aren't really doing anything.
People that are stuck in the old paradigm are going to go back to zero. Those countries will be behind in economy and scientific advancement.
Paradigm: U.S. education system is successful with creativity stressed courses over "rote-oriented" ones.
-For the U.S. to be successful in this new paradigm we must focus on math and science more then creativity. "I have never seen the guy who doesn't know how to multiply who created software...You need to understand things in order to invent beyond them". (Bill Gates)
Paradigm: That the US is on top with everything and noone will be able to catch up with the US. But as Fridman says on page 214, "India, China, and the former Soviet Empire are not just walking on to the flat-world field... What we are witnessing is a mad dash..."
This means that everyone is catching up with the US and we just don't realize that an "esplosion of aspirations coming out of India, China, and the former Soviet Empire..."

In the reading, Friedman discusses how when the Soviet Union broke up, there was an influx of high-level scientists onto the global scene that had been comfortable controled by Americans and Western Europeans. This caused America and Western Europe to return to zero because their standerds were no longer high enough to compete globally, so to compete competitively in the new paradigm, everyone had to raise their standards. The new opportunity of this new paradigm is that there is now a greater quantity of talent for companies to hire from, creating improved products and systems.
The paradigm I chose in involved with education.- American schools are very prestiges and lead the future generation to be sucessful.
Yet as America is compared to other countries we have the lightest load of homework and the least amount of hours in school.
-Americas future as a whole will go to zero as the next generation is unable to survive and compete with surrounding countries.

Paradigm: The US has dominates the court in Olympic basketball, so we can sit comfortable at the top.
Shift: The other teams learn and watch us while we are ignorant, and start to push our number one spot.
"Star for star, the basketball teams from places like Lithuania or Puerto Rico still don't rank as well versus the Americans, but when they play as a team-when the collaborate better than we do-they are extremely competitive.
One of paradigm from the reading was that most people in the world think that U.S. is one of the most technological and industrialized countries in the world. However, the U.S. ranks 13th in the global rankings of broadband Internet usage. Most homes in the U.S. have basic broadband which is the slowest, most expensive, and most obsolete broadband in the world today. Countries such as Norway, Israel, and Finland have passed the U.S. in broadband usage for the first time in history. The fact is that the smartest counties in the world are offering the fastest and cheapest broadband internet to their users which is something that the U.S. is not offering their users.

I think the main paradign Friedman is referring to is that we Americans feel that hard work is no longer neccisary beause we are already successful. He uses the basketball analogy as an example (of our economy), saying that unless we "step it up a notch" and shift our paradign so that we're not the "best" anymore, our winning streak won't last much longer and we will go back to zero.
-Marina Mossaad
A paridigm that I saw was how technology and the internet now make it possible for foreigners to "innovate without having to emigrate". Foreigners who in the past had to come to the U.S. to be able to preform world class work can now do this in their home countries. This shift leads to american companies hiring foreign labor, which narrows the job market in the U.S. sending some americans with science and engeneering degrees back to zero. Americans may need to work for less or get sent back to zero in this new paradigm.

A paradigm that the U.S. is facing is that were at the top of everything, in this case, science, math, and engineering. But that is constantly shifting at a rapid rate, on page 335, Friedman says that the chinese are leading this science revolution. What the U.S. has to do is get students more involved in science and math, to create an even more productive society.
One of the paradigms Friedman talks about is that Americans think it's better to only buy things made in the USA. However if we had not started trading more with others, we would have gone back to zero because we would have to make everything ourselves, which is much more expensive and not nearly as competetive in the world market.

One obvious Paradigm that is identified by Friedman that has been said already, but is a very good point, is that of the US Olympic Basketball team. It was thought forever that the US basketball team was unbeatable; we could put in even college players and of course, we'd get the gold. Yet in an unexpected twist, we lost, breaking our old paradigm of assured victory. The rule for new success under the paradigm is that the US basketball EARNS their title, and not just try and breeze through it like before.

A paradigm that had existed throughout the Cold War was that USSR-held states and western states had closed borders, and strongly held their populace either by force or by motivation.
Once Hungary shifted this paradigm, there was no going back - the wall was literally brought to zero, as the government would have been if it had resisted.
- Thomas D.
a very basic but important paradigm from the reading is that the ones in control remain in control by using old processes. Now, thanks to global connection (dot-com boom) there is the triple convergance of new players using new processes and habits to level the playing field. The people that go to zero are the people that do not think the new players are a threat to their business and assume that the tactics the have been using will prevail.
I think that Friedman's major paradigm shift is that America is no longer first in everything, not only relating to the Olympic basketball team but also regarding science, education, jobs, and wealth.
The fact of the matter is that America needs to realize that it can't be number one just because it's America, there is now a threatening global competition to be top of the line. America will be the one to go back to zero if it does'nt start improving. Not only will America be beat out of the gold medal, but America will also lose in the race for knowledge, lose jobs, and lose its wealth and power.
Paradigm: In The World is Flat on page 335 Friedman adresses the education. Which the old paradigm was that the american education of math and science was able to compete with the rest of the world.
Acording to Friedman in order to be successful in the new paradigm the american education system needs to improve particularly in junior high, where young people lose interest in science.
