HW 4 Thurs

Sorry if I didn't explain it enough -- hopefully you'll find this. . .

Using the Dialectic Journal model (pages 40-42), read the brief essay on page 932, completing five journal responses. Intended to be a short familiarizing assignment for that "way in" to a text, so 20 minutes should more than do it.

See ya 'morrow, ye pirates and ninjas!

Representation anyone???

Click on the link (Reprentation anyone???) to access article about predictions of future representation in House from the 2010 census. This ties in nicely with class over the next couple of days and will be very important to our study of the Legislature later this semester. A Must Read and if brave enough offer some possible repercussions for these predictions as the article does.

DoI

Find a reference to the Declaration of Independence. This could range from another country's constitution to a political speech to an appeal for civil rights. . .

Add link and 1 sentence describing connection/context.

Sample Test Prompts

1. John Locke feels that the power to gov’t. is limited by the will of the people whereas Thomas Hobbes states the gov’t’s power is absolute. Explain what you believe would be Rousseau’s comments on the limits of government’s power.
2. Hobbes thought that man was inherently evil and there was little if no good in him. Locke on the other hand had a more optimistic view of man’s nature and thought he capable of doing good (governing for the good of the society). On who’s side would JJ Rousseau interject and why?

Just Sayin'

Today, Sept. 14, the Post-Bulletin posted an article about a MN State budget balancing tool that is "online." The same tool was posted to this blog on Sept. 9. Well done DT, just sayin'. Now if we only had the student responses to show their engagement. . .

Philosopher's Letter

Philosopher Letter

Use the following readings to construct your letter.

Hobbes A Student’s History of Philosophy
Hobbes Ch. 13 of Leviathan
Locke Second Treatise excerpts
Thucydides History of the Peloponnesian War
Aristotle Politics
Plato Allegory of the Cave
Machiavelli The Prince
Rousseau The Social Contract

Your letter should be typed, double spaced and should be between 2-3 pages in length. Your facts, writing style and grammar should be checked to insure that your letter meets the expectations set for APLG students. The assignment is worth 50 points. Due date is on the calendar. (let’s review this date to see if it needs adjusting)

You are to write a letter to a leader (could be current, doesn’t have to be). You should demonstrate your understanding of your philosopher’s beliefs as your letter unfolds. You may be offering advice or you may be seeking advice in your correspondence. You may reference other philosopher’s ideas if you wish to further your point. You really have free reign to create this letter as you see fit. Have some fun with this and be creative.

Underapplied-for scholarship!!

From an email that was forwarded to me. . ."We have so few entries for our BBB Student of Integrity Scholarship that I am frantically reaching out to principals in our service area to see if they have students who would be interested. There are two scholarships – one $10,000 and one $5,000 – to be awarded to two seniors in high school who can demonstrate their understanding of the importance of ethics and integrity in their lives. This scholarship has less to do with grades and more to do with a student’s character. The scholarships will be presented in conjunction with the Better Business Bureau Integrity Awards, which are given to companies that demonstrate ethics in their business practices. The BBB Integrity Awards will take place Wednesday, October 20 from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. at the Minnesota History Center in St. Paul. Winning students and their parent will receive free tickets to the event, where the scholarships will be presented.

The application and further details are available at http://minnesota.bbb.org/student-of-integrity-scholarship/.

But the deadline is September 20!! It is unclear why we have received so few entries, but none-the-less it makes for good odds for the students that do enter.

If you can spread the word to your seniors (they must be a senior this year) who are interested in attending college next year, please have them visit our Website (above) to download a scholarship entry form."

HELP!!!!!!

As you probably already know, Minnesota has a Budget Deficit Problem aka BDP. Unlike the federal government, Minneosta is bound by law to balance it's budget. Help out our prospective governors Dayton, Emmer or Horner balance the state's budget at the following site. (This is just for fun not official-it is maintained by a lobbyist firm). Feel free to post your successes or frustrations.
