Pork Assignment
Your task: Find an example of Pork spending in the 2010 or 2011 budget. Must meet the criteria for pork so be careful. Your example must be unique so don't wait to be the 41st person to blog as there are only 42 examples of pork in the budgets. (just kidding, my sources tell me there were 9,129 earmarks worth $16.5 billion in the 2010budget alone)
When you reply I need:
the link where you got your info
the name of the Senator or Rep responsible for the pork
the state or district where person is from
a short description of what the money is to be used for
how much money are we talking about
Due by the time we take our test on Congress!!!!
Example:$500,000 by Delegate Madeleine Bordallo (D-Guam) for a Brown Tree Snake program. Apparently brown snakes are "running" roughshod on the island of Guam and our tax dollars are needed to help rid the island of these reptiles.

By Mike Crapo; Idaho (R) He got 2.5 million for potato research for his district and a parts of Maryland, Maine and Wisconsin. Apparently 1.5 million of the money will go to "competitive potato breeding". I had no idea people bred potatoes competitively (haha). The next pork money Crapo gets will go to petition the Olympic Committee to include a variety of vegetable competitions.
$775,000 for the Institute for Food Science and Engineering (IFSE) requested by Sen. Mark Pryor (D-Ark.), Sen. Blanche Lincoln (D-Ark.) and Rep. John Boozman (R-Ark. 3rd District). How much meat?
$254,000 in a grant
For?

The Montana Sheep Institute (MSI) also works with the Montana Wool Growers Association. Their goal is to "explore opportunities to increase the utilization of sheep in weed management programs and improve the profitability and competitiveness of theMontana Sheep Industry."
This is a pretty ba-a-a-a-ad way to spend our money.

Thank you to the 34 of you who posted examples of "pork". Before you get all up in arms over some of this spending, keep in mind it makes up less than 1% of the entire federal budget. However it can still be a bit hard to stomach when you read about what some of your hard earned tax dollars are being spent on in some constituencies around the country.
By the way, Ben and Elizabeth win the award for the biggest LOL for their great posts on VEGGIES!
