This article deals with the decline in Bush's approval rating, but on the Today show this morning it said that Bush's approval rating is now 47% (12/20/05). This still below 50% but this is a big increase from his previous 30% range approval rating. I think his approval rating is going up because he is being to take responsibility for some of the errors the Bush administration made and he is now taking more action to work to accomplish the goals of the American people. Bush is still below 50%, but if he keeps this up he could finally have a majority of US citizens backing him, something he's been without for a while.

I was a little confused on whether the Democratic leadership council was a part of the Democratic party of was a third party, so if anyone could clear that up for me that would be appreciated. I realize that the war in Iraq has split the democrats but I think that From and Penn’s “middle ground” strategy isn’t a very good one. Rejecting deadlines but measuring progress will just make the party look like they are indecisive on the issue. They also shouldn’t be telling them to “hold Bush accountable for the results” because as the numbers recently show his approval ratings have gone up because he owned up to his mistakes.

In Dick Morris' aritice "Spy story could bite Democrats" from newsmax.com.......
"Mrs. Clinton's position — that she takes "responsibility" for her vote but that she wouldn't have voted for the war if she knew then what she knows now but we shouldn't withdraw but we should set a series of milestones to use in deciding when to withdraw but we shouldn't set a timetable for pulling out"

it seems Mrs. clinton agrees with From and Penn with a middle path....pulling out is too dangerous, but benchmarks and keeping Bush accountable is the best strategy for democrat moderates.

somehow for me, the fact that Clinton approved this strategy and I share some of the same views about the war with her, the idea of the middle path seemed more accountable

I also agree with Penn and From that to take advantage of the door opening for democrats, they need to bring a halt towards the path what many belive the democrats are doing "drifting to the left" (party becoming more liberal) and taking the middle path will help

Al From is very wise to warn the DLC about using president Bush's situation for the future election. While the population opposed the war by 54 to 44 percent, I think people will oppose leaving Iraq as an unstabalized country even more. "A strong majority of Americans, 58 percent, support keeping military forces in Iraq until "civil order is restored," even in the face of continued U.S. causalities." http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A14266-2004Dec20.html
Its also very smart to take the moderate position because not many people are brave enough to agree with any extremes. If you keep quiet, no one is going to disagree with you.

Well it's finally sunk in that this is the last night of winter break and I actually have to do homework....
I agree with the DLC that, at least in order to be more popular and successful with the American public, the Democratic party needs to lean a little bit farther toward the middle of the road. According to a poll by the Los Angeles Times 46% of Americans still feel that abortion should be illegal except for cases of rape, incest and to save the mother's life, and 57% consider it murder. Just under two thirds of Americans also believe that homosexual relations are morally wrong. With so much of America still conservative on social issues that have arguably decided elections, the Democrats need to remain moderate on as many issues as they can to retain any appeal to mainstream America. While it may only be misguided ideas on the part of Americans that cause such conservative leanings (sorry Eric), we Democrats still need to try and relate to those Americans who have yet to be enlightened, if we have any hope of being elected. Just kidding all you conservatives, you know I love you, who would I debate with during class if we didn't have different opinions?

Just read the "keep it academic" part of Mr. Thompson's original post, sorry, wanted to reiterate my partisan comment was only a joke, I hope I didn't offend anybody. Blame my inability to read instructions on too many college apps and way too many cups of coffee.

This is the perfect chance for Democrats to capitalize on all the mishaps done by the Bush administration. I agree with most of the bloggers and Aristotle ("Golden Mean"). Rather than promoting hardcore liberal views to an America that has lost tremendous faith in its conservative president, democrats must still remain moderate. As stated in our textbooks, one of the most clever strategies for the democrats is to play the "watchdog" role by pointing out and exaggerating all mistakes (Katrina, Iraq war, Secret Prisons) done by the other major party, while slowly advocating liberal views.

I agree with From and Penn, and most of America agrees as well. When Murtha called for immediate withdrawal of troops from Iraq in mid-November, there was an uproar among his colleagues and the country. Democrats need to be careful and cannot call for immediate withdrawal as a party. We already saw the reaction when a Democratic representative announced his opinion. Democrats would lose even more support if the party announced that particular opinion.
