Non-violent Civil Disobedience

Rosa Parks. 'nuf said.

Cindy Sheehan. Here's her blog entry describing her civil disobedience and arrest on October 26th, 2006. The Huffington Post is less than six months old, and worth your time learning what it is and who blogs there, as this is part of the new media of the digital age.

A Minnesota woman, in today's LA Times, is an example of pacifist activism, but what laws does she break? If none, then not NVCD.

What are other contemporary examples on non-violent civil disobedience?

it's a boot camp to train activists up for some quality civil disobedience. you have to wonder if they study their thoreau and gandhi every night...or maybe not.

okay sorry, had to add one more quick thing i found while searching cbs news for civil disobedience.

http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2003/11/27/national/main585919.shtml?CMP=ILC-SearchStories

it's about how oral sex is an act of civil disobedience in singapore. mark your calendars for next year, it seems we've already missed it. Nov 25th is national oral sex day in singapore. apparently it's quite important to some citizens.

i don't even think there are any more appropriate comments to add to this, so i'm just going to stop.

Technically, this is not civil disobedience because it is not against the law (unless I am mistaken) for a judge to rule contrary to an existing law. However, I would say it qualifies as "legal" civil disobedience because the judge IS going against a law.

This is an article about a court ruling in New York on the issue of gay marriage. Against a current law in the state, a judge ruled in favor of same sex marriage, saying that the state's domestic relations law is unconstitutional in banning such marriages. Even though that ruling has now been overthrown by an appeals court, by ruling against the standing law, it brought attention to the issue. With the way our courts work, it wouldn't be entirely surprising if the ruling is appealed again, so who knows if in the end the original judge's act of defiance of the law will make a difference. Perhaps not a great example of civil disobedience, but its close.

Civil Disobedience doesn't have to be on a momumental scale. If you can pick at the government piece by piece that is just as damaging. I plan to go to each of these states after High School to show the government that it can't oppress like it has for hundreds of years!

Fight the Power!

A real example of civil disobedience, it may not be modern but it is still a form of civil disobedience that people don't realize as much. When all those US citizens left to Canada instead of fighting in a war they felt was unjust. I understand why they left, but they shouldn't be allowed back... just my opinion.

I just talked to my brother, Adam. I asked him if he had ever practiced any forms of civil disobedience (for those of you that don't know he is my exact opposite). He said that he's been in a lot of protests, but it's never escalated to MLK, Jr. status. I asked him about any contemporary examples of civil disobience and he instantly responded with...
