Oh man. Stevens trying to attach that Alaska Wildlife Oil Drilling thing to the bill about the budget made me super mad. It's not the wildlife's fault that we have a defecit and it's not their fault that we take over where they used to freely live so now they have to live on a small piece of land that just happens to have oil beneath it. We've done enough to ruin their lives, we should just concentrate on not ruining our own lives any more. I'll say it again, oh man. I'm going to try and not seem like too much of an animal rights activist and just end this here.
It's rather unfortunate that cuts have to come from health care and such, yet veterans don't get cuts...? Yeah, I don't quite understand that one. It's also unfortunate that we will have to probably increase the defense spending while education and labor programs may not get their budget increases passed. I understand the logic of doing so, I'm just saying that it's very unfortunate.
You know what's ridiculous? We need to budget money for Americans to switch over their TV sets. Because we really need television that badly that it needs to have $1.5 billion dollars budgeted for that sole purpose. Ri-di-cu-lous. Go to the movies, at least you're getting out of your basement.
I really want to write Mr. Stevens a letter now, I'm growing to despise this man.
Well said all! Alaska: completely ignoring the moral question "should we drill, should we not drill", its important to note that they had to move it from its original place to the defense bill. If that doesn't spell "Christmas-tree bill", I don't know what does. But luckily, this "lil rider" didn't go unnoticed by the Senators. Looking at a followup article written by Weisman (sorry sara) on December 22: the results of the original article Mr. Thompson put up were that the Senate passed the bill "by narrowest margin." Literally, Cheney had to come in to break the tie, so the budget will be reduced by $40 billion over 5 years, IF the House approves the 3 changes the Senate demanded. Most delt with the Artic Drilling, to which Ted Stevens fumming-ly said to the senators who voted against it: "I'm going to go to every one of your states, and I'm going to tell them what you've done. This was wrong." No, Senator Stevens, I'm afraid one of the more "wrong" and questionable parts of the bill is the irony of cutting student loans, but then spending money to promote math and science. Why not allow those people already gun-ho to study math and science to get student loans, and reduce the "encouragement of math and science" spending to even it out?
"A $3 billion program to help Americans buy equipment for converting digital television signals for analog TV sets was scaled back to about $1.5 billion."
If you can't pay to convert it, don't get it! While we were in New York, Meag and I saw some families who almost couldn't afford to feed their families, living in absolute dumps...but they had a t.v. in every room. Come on government, do you really think helping people get that access is helping them??? I applaud them for cutting it, but they need to slash things like that. Just because someone along the way thought it was a good idea doens't mean it is.
Congress seems to be having trouble sucking it up and being a man when it comes to tagging the Arctic drilling onto the defense bill.
"Democrats, and many Republicans, have denoucned the decision to attach the Arctic drilling provision as 'shameful'. But it is unclear if they have the muscle to thwart legislation that has been sought by oil companies for ages."
The Republicans say they'll try to bring the issue back to debate, and they are "threatening" to OPPOSE the deal. Okay... see how far this opposition gets you.
If both Democrats and most Republicans find the tagging shameful, where are they finding the difficulty in stopping it from happening? As far as I see it, this Ted Stevens man is the only enemy. One man?!? Oil companies can only complain. They ain't got nothin' against the House and Senate, IF they buck up and truly oppose the drilling measure.
Let me just start out by saying in response to the tentative agreement that was reached on the budget...It seems to be a band-aid on a bullet wound. We are sinking further and further into debt each second. We've all see the debt clock that updates every second, minute, day. We are always sinking.
Here's a point of view on the budget agreement, "Conservatives hailed the deficit-cutting measure as the first attempt in a decade to rein in the cost of federal benefit programs, which customarily expand from year to year based on the eligible population." And this, "And there were provisions that pointed the way to higher spending in the future." So I guess we don't have to worry about things getting better for a while...
Sorry to be rather naive and such, but all this fiscal twaddle sets my head spinning. The entire business of dropping a line from a bill and attaching it to another seems extremely pointless and frivolous to me. If something has been knocked down by Congress, should it not stay down? At least modify it, people.
The real struggle here seems to be between helping the American people as a whole (supposed oil drilling in Alaska) and helping minority groups and special programs (welfare, student loans, etc). How can that bridge be gapped? And then you enter the age-old discussion of ethics and getting at the true divisions of political groups...
I have no notion as to why cutting student loans would help anyone. Since the students they are their future voters, statemen, politicians, doctors, presidents, I can't see why it would be beneficial to harm their future. Just a little confused diatribe... Alyssa
Its good to know that our government is doing something to help reduce the national debt. However, it almost reduces your morale when cuts only reduce the debt by less than half a percent of 14.3 trillion of our budget in the next five years. Still it is good that they are cracking down on the spendings. Those evil senior citizens. "...Medicaid would be lowered by $5 billion over five years...Most of the savings would come from clamping down on middle- and upper-income seniors who transfer assets to family members, then plead poverty to obtain Medicaid coverage for nursing care." The negative side to this is that a lot of cuts are being made from essential programs. Especially that cut for money given to student loans. I guess you have to sacrifice some things and chose the lesser of the evils.
The most prominent issue for me was the split in the Republican regarding the drilling in Alaska. I had no idea that there were Republicans who were so against it. However, I think Rep. Boehlert's way of responding to the issue was a little immature. Just because he didn't like the one part about Alaskan drilling, he was going to scuttle the whole bill, regardless of what it contained... yea, really smart.
This article just makes me wonder how much Congress makes bills to better the American public, or if, for the most part, they use their power for personal gains or revenge or whatever. ie: bridge to nowhere, scuttling bills because you dont like one part...
