In class, we have started to examine the revolution and rhetoric. The Declaration of Independence is famous for its rhetoric in explaining the principles of the revolutionaries and their perceived condition. In this blog entry, I intend to show how rhetoric is used in the Declaration of Independence to strengthen their case against the British government.
The preamble includes what is the most famous quote from the document, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness”. While it is eerily similar to a quote from Locke, “...Life, Liberty, and Property”, the line also contains powerful ethos, referring to the equality of man and “unalienable Rights”.
The list of charges against King George III is essentially one giant example of ethos meant to demonstrate to King George III and the British government what they did that would justify the colonists’ revolution. “He has refused to pass other Laws for the accommodation of large districts of people, unless those people would relinquish the right of Representation in the Legislature, a right inestimable to them and formidable to tyrants only”. This gripe is twofold in its meaning; first of all, it claims that the colonists desire some level of independence from the British crown since they had become accustomed to living under Salutary Neglect, It also is a jab at the King in saying that only a tyrant would try to browbeat the colonists into a state of complete dependence.
The last section of the Declaration is when the revolutionaries actually declare independence from Britain, again alluding to the philosophies of Locke, “When in the Course of human events, it becomes necessary for one people to dissolve the political bands which have connected them with another, and to assume among the powers of the earth, the separate and equal station to which the Laws of Nature and of Nature's God entitle them, a decent respect to the opinions of mankind requires that they should declare the causes which impel them to the separation”.

some good points relating what's in class to the document. however. I think that most of the list of grievances is pathos, not ethos, because Jefferson specifically uses his diction (word choice) and literary devices to evoke strong feelings. "he has RAVAGED our coasts", etc. think about how Mr. Decker used vocal variety when he was reading the Declaration in class today. The Declaration was designed to be spoken, orated, not just read. the language filled with pathos only strengthens this conclusion.
I agree with Josh in the aspect that the list of grievances is meant to appeal to pathos more so than ethos. However, it's undeniable that the central appeal is ethos because they are outlining: here is the problem, here is what we SHOULD do. But I also think that rhetoric presents itself in forms other than simply ethos, pathos, and logos. As I said in class, I look at the Declaration as an induction, meaning a series of specific examples that leads to a general conclusion. The list of grievances being the series of examples, and the conclusion being 'this is why we ought to be free'.
I like looking at the Declaration in such depth and examining the different ways Jefferson put together this masterpiece :)
Nathan, I really agreed with much that you had to say in your blog regarding rhetoric and the revolution. As we discussed in class; the declaration is not only chalked full of strong diction, but it also uses anaphora, epithets, and syllorgism. While you pointed out the ethos in much of what was stated, I wanted to also point out that much of what could be interpreted as ethos could also be interepreted as pathos. I personally feel it is the combination of these two very important appeals that made the declaration as successful and lasting as it was. The Declaration of Independence was a document that everyone could relate to and understand in their own way. It appealed to the pathos of the colonists, firing them up and getting ready to fight. At the same time its strong appeal to logos and ethos kept it from being disgarged as propaganda. I agree with Mr. Thompson’s remark, “The Declaration of Independence was the birth certificate for the United States.”
This document was successful in not only expressing the negetive vews of the colonists but show that they meant buisiness. Without both of these aspects I feel we would not be where we are today.

I agree with all of you in that the Declaration of Independence strongly uses diction, logos, ethos and pathos. However, there are more rhetorical strategies in the document then just those. Rosie touched on the use of anaphora (he has... in the list of grievances), epithets (the jab at the King as Nate pointed out), and syllogism (The King is a tyrant so he cannot rule a free people). But there are more than that. Thomas Jefferson uses amazing syntax even in the first sentence, and The Declaration itself flows in a problem/solution and or a cause/effect pattern. Jefferson also takes on the persona of the entire nation and not just himself. This allows the audience to relate to the document and to feel like part of the nation; which accomplishes one of the goals of inspiring the colonists to want to fight for their independence.

My viewpoint on the list of grievances is most of them are logos, not ethos. Thomas Jefferson is offering examples, facts, and details that support the main idea of the Declaration of independence. He is showing examples of some of the things that King George III has done and supports the reason why the U.S. colonists are separating away from the British government. I also agree with Josh that some of the grievances are pathos because Jefferson uses vivid and figurative language to appeal to emotion such as "to compleat the works of death, desolation, and tyranny." I believe that the list of grievances are all logos and some have pathos incorporated in them to strenghthen the logos or the "examples" Thomas Jefferson uses to support the main idea. The three main rhetorical devices that Jefferson used in the Declaration of Independence strenghthens the main idea that they are trying to relay to King George III and the British Government

Well because of my terrible habbit of procrastination most of my main thoughts and ideas were taken. But there are a few things that I can talk about with Nathan's Blog and the responces to it. First of all I agree with Nate on all of the rhetorical devices used. When using the quotes I noticed, like Mr. Edmonds said, that most of the important statements taken from the Declaration of Independence have 3 parts. For example "...Life, Liberty, and pursuit of Happiness" it is easier for the important points to stay with the people when used in threes. (if only I could remember the name!!)
I also agree with Josh. When reading the document I felt the emotion of Jefferson writing it. Freedom has a different connotation for everyone and Jefferson uses a great deal of diction to explain exactly what he means through his emotions.
