A bit of information:
Alito was born on April Fools Day and nominated on Halloween. He's a fan of the holidays.
He has a freakin' blend of coffee named after him called, "Judge Alito's Bold Justice Blend", which is a mix of Columbian, Java, and New Guinea with, "a bit of espresso". Unfortunately it can only be accessed in Newark. MAN!
President Bush called him scholarly, fair-minded and principled which will serve him well in the highest court of law.

Random facts that I found interesting:
Alito was born in 1950 (he's 55-ish now!).
Some lawyers gave him the nickname "Scalito" because they believe that he models himself after Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia.
On abortion, Alito was the lone dissenter in the Planned Parenthood v. Casey, in which the 3rd Circuit struck down a Pennsylvania law that required women seeking abortions to inform their husbands.
Alito has a history for being a "dissenter" (what a rebel!). His most memorable dissent was in the Sheridan v. Dupont case, a sex discrimination suit.

My comment carries over from the previous blog. The whole thing of Miers and Roberts being approached from very different ways for their confirmation seems very strange. While I do not think that Miers was the ideal candidate, I hope that is has nothing to do with her being a women. I am sure it doesn't, I was just wondering. Now Alito...I would have preferred a women candidate. Going from Sandra Day O'Connor, who was often a swing vote to Alito, a male very conservative judge is a bit too drastic for me...well here's what I found from a liberal but reliable source. I know someone is going to pull the "we're all equal what does it matter, boy or girl." Talk to me later if thats your plan. Heres what I have on have on Alito, from a liberal, but reliable source.
As a judge on the Appeals Court, Alito issued a ruling to gut the Family and Medical Leave Act, which guarantees most workers up to 12 weeks of unpaid leave to care for a loved one in an emergency. In separate cases, Alito wrote dissenting opinions that would have made it essentially impossible to prove employment discrimination based on race or disability. The extremist anti-abortion group Operation Rescue (who opposed Harriet Miers) responded to Alito's nomination today by saying: "Roe's days are numbered...We are trusting that we are now on the fast-track to derailing Roe v. Wade as the law of the land." In one significant case, Alito wrote a dissenting oppinion that would have allowed an unauthorized strip search of a woman and her 10 year-old daughter, in their own home, without a warrant.
Ask me if you want sources!
Most of what I found about Alito's history has already been said: Yale Law graduate, served as assistant to solicitor General Rex E. Lee from 1981 to 1985 where he argued 12 cases before the Supreme Court. He was appointed to the appeals court by the first President Bush in 1990 after his service as a U.S. attorney for New Jersey. His nomination is both being praised by conservatives and drawing heavy fire from democrats, because of his standing as a solid conservative. Pat Leahy, the highest ranking democrat on the Senate Judiciary Committee, calls Alito's nomination "needlessly provocative" and says that the President is rewarding "one faction of his party" at the "risk of dividing the country." The only thing that there's little doubt of is that his confirmation process should be an interesting one.

Other than stating many of the facts others have already said, I'll come off with a few new ones...
His career goes as following:
- 1976-1977: Clerked for the Honorable "Leonard I. Grath" of the Third Circuit.
- 1977-1981: Served as Assistant United States Attorney, District of New Jersey.
- 1981-1985: Was assistant to Solicitor General Rex E. Lee.
- 1985-1987: Was deputy assistant to Attorney General Edwin Meese.
- 1987-1990: Served as United States Attorney for the District of New Jersey.
On Feb. 20th, 1990 George Bush (Sr.) nominated him to the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.
Also he was rated by the American Bar Association as "Well Qualified."

Mmm, count that.
He likes corned beef sandwichs from Hobby's Deli in Newark. And that coffee Tina was talking about was a birthday present to him from T.M. Ward Coffee Company. Well if he likes corned beef sandwiches he must be a good judge....

2 random facts...
In 1997, Alito authored the majority opinion upholding a city's right to stage a holiday display that included a Nativity scene and a menorah because the city also included secular symbols and a banner emphasizing the importance of diversity.
He is a voracious reader with a particular love for biographies and history.
Mr. Alito went to Princeton (bachelors) and Yale (Law school)...whoa. yeah i know monica already said that, but it helps my arguments. Alito got married the same year as my parents, 1985, to Martha-Ann Bomgardner, and has two kids, just like my parents! whoa, he could be my dad or something (my dad went to princeton too...so many connections!!). They're almost the same age too...oh man! well anyway, the white house seems to think he is highly qualified for the job...but if he's so much like my dad i don't know...ha just kidding, i'm sure my dad would make a great supreme court justice...yeah or not. anyway, now that i've succeeded in rambling, i will end this. now.
oh do we need a source?? mine's this: http://www.whitehouse.gov/infocus/judicialnominees/alito.html
okay sorry one more thing!!!! i totally forgot.
ready...??
my dad's mom (as in my grandma) is 90 years old.
seriously you guys, this guy could be my dad and i'm just not telling you. my dad told me he was going to china...but maybe he meant washington dc!! ha. sorry, i'm stretching this too much, aren't i? i thought so.
It is said that Samuel Alito is a strong supporter of the right to privacy, but others aren't sure where he stands on privacy because of his lack of applying the Fourth Amendment to some of his cases.
He has said "no private sexual act between consenting adults should be forbidden." Alito also wants an end to discrimination against homosexuals in hiring.

Here's something that I hope no one else has: According to the BBC (yes I scan the BBC) Samuel Alito has been compared to current Justice Antonin Scalia, a conservative Italian Roman-Catholic as well. While it's not a huge insight, I found it interesting that Scalia's nomination wasn't hindered much because Rhenquist was promoted (distracting attention). Today, I believe that Alito's nomination won't be hindered much either because of the higher profile induction earlier this year.

Just so Chelsea's musings are put to rest (I think) Alito was born in Trenton, New Jersey. This is the only fact i found about him that hasn't been said already...
