One of the main reasons the Senate is hesitant to renew the Patriot Act is because it gives Bush a lot of power. When I was watching the news it had Bush explaining why Congress needed to renew the Patriot Act, but I don't think congress will. Many congressmen are appauled by the phone taps that the Bush administration had done in the past. The Patriot Act could easily be abused by the government and congress wants to keep America's civil liberties alive. I don't see the Patriot Act getting renewed.

First thing in the article that caught my attention was that Mr. Frist changed his vote. I had always thought that you could only vote once. The second item was how Presidnet Bush used his executive power by secretly authorizing the National Security Agency to eavesdrop on U.S. citizens and foreign nationals in this country.

Just a few days ago, Congress agreed to extend the Patriot Act for five weeks. The Senate originally wanted to extend it for six months, in order to allow more time for negotiation and alterations. The House, which has already passed 14 of the 16 provisions of the Patriot Act, with a few changes, argued against such a long period. I think that the extension is good, because it will give the lawmakers more time to read over the bill and consider it. Trying to make a hasty decision because they were running out of time could have prevented some of the members of Congress from being adequately informed or fully convinced of their choice. Once the five weeks are over, though, Congress should make a final decision. After all, they are the lawmakers and it is their duty to make laws and not just postpone the vote indefinitely.

The Patriot Act has certainly been a topic of concern or of debate for many people lately. The Senate didn't reauthorize the act which sparked controvery and debate among politicians and the american people.

In an article entitled "Senate fails to reauthorize Patriot Act:
Threat of filibuster of controversial measure successful," it was written as follows. "In a crucial vote early Friday, the bill's Senate supporters were not able to get the 60 votes needed to overcome a filibuster by Sens. Russ Feingold, D-Wisconsin, and Larry Craig, R-Idaho, and their allies. The final vote was 52-47."

Also in the article, "If the Patriot Act provisions expire, Republicans say they will place the blame on Democrats in next year's midterm elections. "In the war on terror, we cannot afford to be without these vital tools for a single moment," White House press secretary Scott McClellan said. "The time for Democrats to stop standing in the way has come."
