Midterm Elections/The New Court:History in the Making?

Wow!!! Talk about making history. Our new court, assuming Judge Alito's confirmation, will be the first of its kind. Pretty amazing when you look at the history of government and religion in the US.

Take this article for what it is worth. The stats can be deceiving but nonetheless the public and the polls are speaking. Who says public opinion can't influence government? I'd say Republicans and Democrats alike had better take notice based on this news flash. Go Third Parties??!!

Get ready for the test on Wednesday and Good Luck!

is it such a big deal that the majority of the nine justices are catholic? obviously due to the scandal it is creating it is to some. From their point of view....a justice of people representing different religions, races, cultures etc sounds quite ideal. The same people might agrue against those who don't see it as an issue with the fact that these representatives affect their lifestlye. However......don't teachers affect our lifestlye? are they not influencing our values, ideals, and stance on views. are they not affecting our lifestlye with the education they give us? Thus, do we as a society need equal representation of teachers in all schools...businessess? etc. i am not saying the majority being catholic would be good or bad....this is just a thought i had.....wow that rhymed!

This is all very interesting. Now, the time we live in, the three branches of government do not seem to have equal power. The executive branch and the legislative branch have more power (I would say "I think" before this sentence, but I guess I am not allowed to)and then the Judicial branch has a little less. Why I say this is because the Judicial Branch doesn't seem to be a big deal to people these days. I feel like all these nominations of judges should be a really big deal. Sure, we talk about it in government class but if it is so life altering, why aren't more people(meaning the citizens) worried about it? So this leads me believe that A) Judicial power is weaker and this really won't affect much OR B)It's easier not to care at all.
I'm inclined to think the latter one.

Now if America had stuck to the Constitution(ahh my beloved Constitution party is so wise), this Catholic majority would be something to be worried about. The Judicial Branch would have equal power as the other two branches. So then the majority of the people on the court being Catholic, means that court doesn't accurately reflect America. So one-third of our government seems totally out of our hands and misrepresents America?

It just seems weird!

All this focus on which party has the majority shows one flaw in the two-party system. Seems to me that too much attention is given to who has the power and not enough to the issues themseleves. Of course, the focus of the article was party majorities, and there is a time and a place for that. However, each time an election comes around, who has the majority seems to be the main focus. I would imagine that a multi-party system would eliminate much of that. Go Canada!
